How the season crumbled

In the offseason: Aaron Boone is moved to second base to make room for Brandon Larson at third base. Larson hits .083 and has four errors in 16 games at the position. He's sent to Triple-A Louisville.

April 8: Starting pitchers do not post a win until the seventh game of the season, when Ryan Dempster earns the 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Astros.

May 7: The starting rotation posts its first win at Great American Ball Park, the 18th home game of the season.

April-June: Shortstop Barry Larkin has been on the DL twice: April 14-May 5: Out with strained left calf; May 22-June 12: Out with strained right calf.

April-June: Felipe Lopez, acquired in a three-team trade that sent starting pitcher Elmer Dessens to Arizona, starts for Larkin. Lopez was tagged as the Reds' shortstop of the future, but he hits just .213 while committing 15 errors in 50 games. The Reds later send him to Triple-A Louisville.

April 5: Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. dislocates his shoulder after running into the outfield wall trying to make a catch. He goes on the DL April 7 and remains there until May 12. Upon his return, he begins to show his All-Star form, including a home run in five consecutive games.

April 8: Jose Guillen is called up from Triple-A Louisville to replace Griffey. He proves himself worthy of the starting position with his hitting and defensive play. But he becomes angry when Griffey rejoins the team and he is relegated to the fourth-man role. Guillen demands to be traded, which Bob Boone brushes off, saying he knows how to handle his players and will get Guillen playing time when possible. For the season, Guillen is hitting .341 with 23 home runs and 63 RBI.

May 21: Austin Kearns injures his shoulder in a collision at home plate with Atlanta's Ray King. Before the run-in, Kearns was hitting .309 with 13 home runs and 44 RBI. In his last 37 games before going on the DL July 17, the outfielder hit .208 with 2 home runs and 14 RBI.

June: Adam Dunn and Sean Casey earn two-game suspensions for their involvement in a bench-clearing brawl with the Philadelphia Phillies June 13. Pitcher Paul Wilson is suspended for five games after charging Cubs reliever Kyle Farnsworth June 19. Dunn, who hit .262 and .249 in his first two major league seasons, has hit .208 this season, including a stretch in which he went 5-for-47 (.106). He is also 13-for-81 (.160) with runners in scoring position.

July 17: Griffey ruptures a tendon in his right ankle in the first game after the All-Star break. The crushing news: he is out for the season. In three-plus seasons with the Reds, he has missed more than 150 games with five stints on the DL.

July 28: The Reds add another error to their major-league leading 100.
