NL: Cardinals' rally stuns Pirates

The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS - Albert Pujols' two-out RBI single capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning and gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday.

With the Cardinals trailing by two in the ninth, Edgar Renteria singled off reliever Mike Lincoln with one out. Kerry Robinson singled for his third hit of the game, and a double steal put runners at second and third.

Pinch-hitter Eduardo Perez popped out for the second out, but Orlando Palmeiro's two-run single tied it at 3.

After Bo Hart walked and pinch-hitter Mike Matheny hit an infield single to load the bases, Pujols singled to center to win it.

The Cardinals were 1-40 when trailing after eight innings before the rally.

Marlins 7, Phillies 6

MIAMI - Juan Pierre hit a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning, and Florida beat Philadelphia for the eighth time in a row.

With a three-game series sweep, Florida is just two games behind NL wild-card leader Philadelphia and seven games above .500 for the first time since 1997.

Cubs 5, Astros 3

HOUSTON - Sammy Sosa hit his 521st career home run, tying Ted Williams and Willie McCovey for 12th place on the career list, as Chicago beat Houston.

Sosa, who had been 0-for-7 in the series, homered to left in the first inning, his 22nd of the season and 12th in July. He trails Jimmie Foxx by 13 homers for 11th place on the career list.

Expos 13, Braves 10

MONTREAL - Orlando Cabrera homered and went 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBI as Montreal came back from four runs down to beat Atlanta.

Endy Chavez, Ron Calloway and Wil Cordero also homered for Montreal, which trailed 5-1 in the third inning and 8-4 in the sixth against Greg Maddux. The Expos got a pair of runs in the sixth, then scored five times in the seventh to go ahead for good.

Dodgers 1, Diamondbacks 0

PHOENIX - Hideo Nomo outpitched Curt Schilling, and rookie Larry Barnes hit an RBI double as Los Angeles defeated Arizona.

A day after losing 1-0 to Arizona, the Dodgers scored one run or fewer for the 26th time this season, but the run was enough for Nomo (12-8).

Giants 6, Padres 2

SAN FRANCISCO - Andres Galarraga drove in four runs to back Jesse Foppert (7-8) as San Francisco beat San Diego for its 10th win in 11 games.

Pedro Feliz also homered for the Giants, who finished 10-1 on their winningest homestand in 14 years.

Foppert won for the third time in four starts, allowing two runs - one earned - and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Rockies 6, Brewers 1

DENVER - Jason Jennings pitched six strong innings and hit a two-run single as Colorado beat Milwaukee to complete its third straight home sweep of the Brewers.

Jennings (10-8) allowed one run, five hits and four walks, giving Colorado its ninth consecutive victory over Milwaukee at Coors Field.
