Trade winds
The non-waiver trade deadline is midnight Thursday. Now that the Reds are out of the race, it is unclear if they will make a deal.
Last season, the Reds spent all of June and the first part of July in second place, and they made four deals to acquire pitching. A look:
June 14: The Reds sent right-hander Jim Brower to Montreal for left-hander Bruce Chen. The result: Chen was 0-2 with a 4.31 ERA in 39 games, all but one in relief.
July 11: The Reds sent outfielder Juan Encarnacion, infielder Wilton Guerrero and pitcher Ryan Snare to Florida for pitcher Ryan Dempster. The result: Dempster was 5-5 with a 6.19 ERA in 15 games, all starts.
July 23: The Reds sent three minor leaguers, infielder David Espinosa, outfielder Noochie Varner and pitcher Jorge Cordova to Detroit for pitcher Brian Moehler, infielder Matt Boone and cash. The result: Moeller was 2-4 with a 6.02 ERA in 10 games, nine starts.
August 15: The Reds sent pitcher Pedro Feliciano, outfielder Elvin Andujar, and outfielders Raul Gonzalez and Brady Clark to the Mets for pitcher Shawn Estes. The result: Estes was 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in six games, all starts.
The conclusion: Only Dempster is still with the Reds. Brower is 7-2 with a 3.69 ERA for the Giants while Feliciano has a 2.97 ERA in 16 games for the Mets.
