Nagy Tribe's new assistant to GM

Baseball Notebook

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND - Former Indians pitcher Charles Nagy was hired by Cleveland on Wednesday as a special assistant to general manager Mark Shapiro.

Nagy, who won 129 games in 13 seasons with the Indians, will spend most of his time evaluating talent in Cleveland's minor league organization.

"It's good to be back," the 36-year-old Nagy said. "I'm excited about this."

PADRES: San Diego activated Phil Nevin on Wednesday, four months after he underwent surgery to repair an injury to his left shoulder.

Nevin dislocated his shoulder while diving for a ball in the outfield during a spring training game on March 7 against the Chicago White Sox. He played 11 games in the minors on a rehab assignment.

A three-time winner of the Padres' MVP honor, Nevin has batted .293 with 108 homers and 375 RBI in 527 games with San Diego.

DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona activated outfielder Danny Bautista and catcher Rod Barajas from the 15-day disabled list and first baseman Lyle Overbay and utility man Robby Hammock back to Triple-A Tucson. Both Bautista, who had a strained left hamstring, and Barajas, who had tendinitis in his left wrist, were in Wednesday's lineup.

RANGERS: Juan Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right calf, a move that could end attempts by Texas to trade the two-time AL MVP before next week's deadline. Gonzalez is hitting .294 with 24 homers and 70 RBI in 82 games.

ANGELS: All-Star third baseman Troy Glaus was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a right shoulder injury.

ROCKIES: Chin-hui Tsao is to start against Milwaukee Friday and become the first pitcher from Taiwan in the major leagues.

Tsao, 22, called up from Double-A Tulsa on Tuesday, is 11-4 with a 2.46 ERA while holding Texas League hitters to a .214 average. He has a league-high 125 strikeouts.

Dodgers outfielder Chin-Feng Chen became the first major league player from Taiwan last September when he made his debut at Coors Field against the Rockies.
