Wolf shuts out Cubs on 4 hits

National League

The Associated Press

CHICAGO - Randy Wolf pitched a four-hitter, and Jim Thome hit a two-run homer for his 1,000th and 1,001st career RBI to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the Chicago Cubs 3-0 Wednesday night.

Wolf (11-5) struck out four and walked three, earning his sixth career shutout despite three Chicago errors. It was his second shutout this season - he pitched a five-hitter against Houston on May 10.

Wolf threw 136 pitches, 87 for strikes.

The Cubs' best scoring chance came in the first inning. Mark Grudzielanek doubled with one out and moved to third on an error by right fielder Bobby Abreu. Wolf then struck out Sammy Sosa, walked Moises Alou and got Eric Karros on a groundout.

Only three more Chicago runners got past first base.

Ricky Ledee opened the scoring in the second, hitting a 1-2 pitch into the right field bleachers off Matt Clement.

Clement (8-8) allowed two more in the third. Placido Polanco drew a leadoff walk, and Thome followed with a homer to right that landed on Sheffield Ave.

Clement allowed just three hits in seven innings but walked five. He struck out five.

Expos 5, Mets 2

MONTREAL - Javier Vazquez struck out 11 in eight innings, and Ron Calloway hit a two-run single in a five-run Montreal first. Vazquez (8-6) allowed five hits and two runs in reaching double-digits in strikeouts for the fifth time in 22 starts this season.

Montreal ended a four-game losing streak after building a 5-0 lead against Jae Weong Seo (5-7) with one out in the first.

Seo allowed hits to six of the first seven batters he faced, including consecutive run-scoring doubles by Edwards Guzman and Orlando Cabrera, and Brad Wilkerson's one-out RBI single. Calloway's two-run single followed Brian Schneider's bloop double.

Seo allowed eight hits and five runs, falling to 0-5 in his last six starts. He has an 8.19 ERA over that span.

Mets rookie Jason Phillips extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI single in the sixth.

Cardinals 8, Padres 4

SAN DIEGO - Edgar Renteria had three hits and drove in two runs to lead St. Louis' 17-hit attack.

Tino Martinez had three hits and scored three runs, Kerry Robinson added three hits and Scott Rolen had two RBI for St. Louis, which avoided a sweep after losing two one-run games to San Diego.

Every hitter in the Cardinals' starting lineup had at least one hit. San Diego was trying to sweep the Cardinals for the first time since August 1995.

Renteria's RBI single in the third put St. Louis ahead 3-2 and his run-scoring double capped a two-run seventh that increased the lead to 7-3.

San Diego's Phil Nevin returned from the 60-day disabled list and went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Brett Tomko (6-6) beat his former team despite allowing three runs and 10 hits in five innings. Tomko struck out six and walked one as he faced the Padres for the first time since they traded him to St. Louis last December.

Mark Loretta went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs for the Padres, who had 12 hits. Mark Kotsay added two hits and two runs.

Brian Lawrence (5-12) lost his third straight start, allowing five runs - four earned - and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He has lost five of his last six decisions and matched his 2002 loss total.
