AL Games: Mariners outslug Twins

The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - This time, Seattle's rally was enough for a victory. Randy Winn capped a five-run sixth inning with a two-run homer as the Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 10-8 Tuesday night.

The Mariners wiped out deficits of five runs and four runs in their previous two games but lost both of them. This time, Seattle trailed 7-3 in the fourth inning before the comeback.

"There was still a lot of game left," Seattle's Mike Cameron said. "We've still got six innings to play after that."

Bret Boone's two-run homer in the fifth against Rick Reed pulled the Mariners to 7-5.

John Olerud tied the score in the sixth off Joe Mays (8-7) with a two-out, two-run single, and Cameron came home with the go-ahead run after center fielder Jacque Jones' throw skipped over catcher A.J. Pierzynski for an error.

Winn, who went 3-for-4, followed with his fourth homer, an opposite-field drive to left.

The AL West-leading Mariners stopped a three-game losing streak, which matched their season high. They remained four games ahead of Oakland for the division lead.

Minnesota had won five straight following the All-Star break but dropped to 49-50 and fell behind Chicago into third place in the AL Central, 5 1/2 games behind division-leading Kansas City. Their pitching, which had been solid since the break, struggled Tuesday.

"We scored enough runs to win the baseball game," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Mays pitched two perfect innings of relief Sunday in his best outing since being demoted to the bullpen on July 6, but Seattle got to him for five runs in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday, raising his ERA to 6.77.

And he compounded problems in the inning by not backing up home plate on Jones' throw, allowing Cameron to score the go-ahead run.

"I'm trying to protect guys by not running them out there every night," Gardenhire said. "Other guys need to get outs. It's a learning experience for Joe coming out of the bullpen."

Julio Mateo (2-0) pitched 4 1-3 innings of three-hit relief, allowing only Shannon Stewart's solo homer in the sixth - Stewart's first homer since Minnesota acquired him from Toronto last week.

Red Sox 7, Tigers 4

BOSTON - Derek Lowe pitched eight strong innings and Kevin Millar and Jason Varitek hit back-to-back homers in the fourth off Mike Maroth (5-14) as Boston beat Detroit.

Lowe (11-4) gave up homers to Eric Munson and Dmitri Young but allowed just four other hits. The sinkerballer recorded 18 outs on grounders, struck out four and walked none. Alan Embree gave up Carlos Pena's homer in the ninth.

Bill Mueller also homered for Boston, which moved 21/2 games behind AL East leader New York with its fourth straight win. The Red Sox are 8-1 against the Tigers this season, 6-0 at Fenway Park.

The Tigers lost their fifth straight and fell to 26-72, the worst record in the majors.

The start was delayed by rain for 1 hour, 20 minutes.

Athletics 10, Royals 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Tim Hudson allowed one hit in seven innings.

In 77 career starts, Hudson is 58-2 when Oakland scores four or more runs.

"I've never had a problem pitching with a big lead," said Hudson. "It's nice to be able to go out there and pitch with a six-spot on the scoreboard."

Hudson (8-4) struck out eight and walked one. Erubiel Durazo hit two homers and had three RBI for Oakland, which gave Kansas City its second shutout loss this season.

Eric Chavez homered and drove in three runs for the Athletics, and Adam Piatt and Ramon Hernandez hit solo homers. The A's had 13 hits, including 10 for extra bases.

Only three batters reached against Hudson, who lowered his ERA from 2.82 to 2.69. His 61st win since the start of the 2000 season tied him with teammate Mark Mulder for the AL lead in that category.

Angels 3, Devil Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Ramon Ortiz allowed an unearned run and three hits over seven innings as Anaheim stopped a season-high five-game losing streak. Ortiz (12-7) kept Tampa Bay hitless in eight at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Tim Salmon had two RBI for the Angels. Brendan Donnelly and Troy Percival, who worked the ninth for his 21st save, completed the three-hitter.

White Sox 5, Indians 2

CHICAGO - Bartolo Colon (7-9), who had been 0-4 in seven starts since beating Los Angeles June 7, gave up two runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings for Chicago. Damaso Marte finished the six-hitter for his sixth save this year.

Frank Thomas and Magglio Ordonez hit consecutive first-inning homers, with Thomas getting the 399th of his career. Carlos Lee also homered for the White Sox, who have won five straight games.

Orioles 12, Rangers 6

BALTIMORE - Jay Gibbons homered and drove in four runs as Baltimore extended a winning streak to six for the first time since June 2000. Robert Machado also homered and B.J. Surhoff had three hits for the Orioles, who completed a 6-0 homestand.

Hank Blalock and Einar Diaz homered, and Alex Rodriguez had four hits for Texas.

Blue Jays-Yankees, ppd.

NEW YORK - Tuesday night's game was postponed because of severe rainstorms. No makeup date was announced.
