Castillo will replace Giles as NL All-Star

Second baseman joins Marlins' Willis, Lowell

The Associated Press

MONTREAL - Florida's Luis Castillo was named to the National League All-Star team Sunday, replacing injured Atlanta second baseman Marcus Giles.

The switch-hitting second baseman has 14 stolen bases and is hitting .314 with six homers and 26 RBI. He will make his second straight All-Star appearance.

"I thought he probably was the most deserving," said NL manager Dusty Baker, who also considered Giants' second baseman Ray Durham.

Castillo is the third Marlins player named to the team, joining third baseman Mike Lowell and rookie left-hander Dontrelle Willis, who was added to the team Friday to replace injured Los Angeles right-hander Kevin Brown.

Giles sustained a concussion Friday in a collision on the basepaths with Chicago pitcher Mark Prior. He was examined Sunday by Dr. Joe Chandler, the Braves' senior orthopedic consultant, who advised Giles not to play.

ALL-STAR FUTURES GAME: Stephen Smitherman, the Reds' 23rd-round draft pick in 2000, and his teammates in the U.S. dugout were worried. The All-Star Futures game was tied in the sixth inning, and the game was supposed to end after seven.

Remember what happened in the big league All-Star game last year, which was called with the score 7-all after 11 innings?

"I think everybody was thinking of that," Smitherman said. "Are we going to tie the ballgame? Are they going to keep playing?"

According to the program, the game would have ended in a tie. But Smitherman made the problem go away, homering off Travis Blackley leading off the bottom of the sixth to give the United States a 3-2 win over the World team Sunday.

The 24-year-old outfielder started the season at Double-A. He made it up to the major leagues for the first time this month, pinch-hitting for the Reds on July 1 and flying out in the ninth inning off Pittsburgh's Scott Sauerbeck.

ROCKIES: Colorado beefed up its bullpen Sunday by trading catcher-outfielder Ben Petrick to Detroit for right-hander Adam Bernero. Bernero started 17 games with the Tigers with just one relief appearance, but Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said he will be used to shore up Colorado's depleted long relief corps.

DIAMONDBACKS: Randy Johnson will make what could be his final rehabilitation outing Tuesday night and could rejoin Arizona's rotation for a start next Sunday in San Diego.

"We're going to wait to see how he comes through his next rehab outing," manager Bob Brenly said on Sunday. "If all goes well, that will be his spot."

CARDINALS: Struggling St. Louis pitcher Matt Morris, previously scheduled to start the first game after the All-Star break on Thursday, will now make his first post-break start the following Monday.

"Based on how we're going to set the second half, we're doing the right thing," manager Tony La Russa said. "Put that together with the way he's feeling and the exams and all the mechanical work, and I think he'll be set up real well."

Morris underwent an MRI exam on Saturday that showed no structural problems.

GIANTS: San Francisco acquired right-handed reliever Matt Herges from the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Herges was 2-2 in 40 appearances for the Padres with three saves and a 2.86 ERA.

In return, the Padres get minor league right-hander Clay Hensley, along with a player to be named or cash considerations.

ASTROS: Houston second baseman Jeff Kent, out since June 27 with tendinitis in his left wrist, is expected to return to the lineup immediately after the All-Star break.
