AL: Angels sweep Twins in ALCS rematch

The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Garret Anderson homered and right fielder Jeff DaVanon threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the seventh inning as the Anaheim Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 8-3 Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the team they defeated in last year's AL championship series.

John Lackey (7-8) allowed three runs and seven hits over six-plus innings, striking out five and walking two. Scott Spiezio and Bengie Molina had RBI doubles, helping the Angels win their fifth straight and 12th in 16 games.

Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer for the Twins, who have lost eight in a row, 22 of 28 and nine straight on the road.

The Angels (49-43) have a .533 winning percentage at the All-Star break, the sixth-lowest among the last 20 teams to win the World Series the previous year.

Athletics 1, Orioles 0

OAKLAND, Calif. - Mark Ellis scored on a grounder back to the pitcher with one out in the ninth inning, giving Oakland a three-game sweep.

A's starter Barry Zito allowed four hits over eight innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

Mariners 13, Devil Rays 2

SEATTLE - Rookie Willie Bloomquist had his biggest day in the majors, hitting a grand slam for his first career homer and driving in six runs.

Yankees 6, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO - Jeff Weaver scattered four hits over eight innings and Jason Giambi homered in his third straight game. Giambi had four RBI and eight in the three-game series. The Yankees, who took two of three from Toronto, moved two games ahead of Boston in the AL East.

Tigers 3, Red Sox 0

DETROIT - Wilfredo Ledezma pitched seven impressive innings and Dmitri Young homered as Detroit snapped Boston's five-game winning streak.

Making his second career start, Ledezma shut down Boston's high-powered offense and outpitched Tim Wakefield.

White Sox 7, Indians 4

CLEVELAND - Tony Graffanino hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Chicago. Graffanino's shot off Alex Herrera snapped a 4-4 tie and helped give the White Sox just their second win in seven games.

Royals 8, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas - Julius Matos and Angel Berroa hit two-run homers in a five-run third inning and Kansas City completed their first three-game sweep at Texas since 1980. The Royals (51-41) are the first team to follow a 100-loss season with 50 wins by the All-Star break.
