MILWAUKEE - In what could be a sign of an impending trade, the Reds optioned infielder Ray Olmedo to Double-A Chattanooga after Sunday's game.
The move leaves a spot on the active roster that most likely will be filled by a pitcher.
"We're either going (to fill the roster spot) through a trade or with our farm system," Reds general manager Jim Bowden said from Chicago late Sunday.
Though left-handed reliever Gabe White is close to coming off the disabled list and could fill the spot, the Reds are searching for a fifth starter.
Jose Acevedo has made three consecutive starts after 26 relief appearances at Triple-A Louisville and may be an option. But the Reds are also said to be interested in acquiring a pitcher such as Jeremi Gonzalez or Victor Zambrano of the Devil Rays in exchange for a third baseman
and/or pitchers.
Olmedo has impressed Reds officials during his two stints with the club this year.
Olmedo, 22, batted .289 with 7 RBI in 28 games, but saw his playing time diminish after the Reds acquired D'Angelo Jimenez from the White Sox on
July 6.
"He did a great job for us, but it's tough for me to get him in right now with the job Jimenez has done," manager Bob Boone said. "And I want him playing . . . I think he did himself proud. He did a terrific job."
