Padres rough up Diamondbacks

National League

The Associated Press

PHOENIX - Sean Burroughs hit a three-run homer, doubled twice and scored three runs as the San Diego Padres routed Arizona 14-2 Thursday, ending the Diamondbacks' 11-game home winning streak.

Mark Kotsay, Mark Loretta and pitcher Kevin Jarvis each drove in two runs for the Padres, who snapped Arizona's four-game overall winning streak. San Diego won for the ninth time in its last 12 games.

The 14 runs were a season high allowed by the Diamondbacks, who had won 18 of their 21 previous games.

Arizona had tied a team record set in May 2000 for its longest winning string at Bank One Ballpark.

Jarvis (2-2), who didn't get into the rotation until June 13 because of an elbow strain, won his second straight after going 0-2 in four starts. He allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings.

Jarvis also had an RBI single in the second inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the six-run fifth.

Elmer Dessens (5-6) had his shortest start since May 20, another 4 1/3-inning effort in a 6-5 loss to San Francisco. He gave up seven runs on 10 hits and a walk.

Rockies 11, Giants 3

DENVER - Preston Wilson had two homers and a career-high six RBI, and Darren Oliver hit his first major-league homer and won his fourth straight decision for Colorado.

Barry Bonds homered for the second straight night, but his solo shot in the fourth was all the Giants could manage off Oliver (7-5) until Rich Aurilia's seventh-inning homer.

Dodgers 9, Cardinals 4

ST. LOUIS - Shawn Green had four hits and scored four runs as Los Angeles swept the two-game series and won consecutive games for the first time since June 20-21. The Dodgers had gone 4-13 since then.

Jolbert Cabrera and Adrian Beltre each drove in two runs for Los Angeles.

Scott Rolen homered, doubled twice and had three RBI for St. Louis, which lost four games in a row for the first time since June 13-16.

Phillies 7, Mets 2

NEW YORK - Jim Thome and Mike Lieberthal capped Philadelphia's four-run first inning with back-to-back homers, and Vicente Padilla pitched into the ninth inning.

Padilla (8-8) allowed seven hits and won his fourth decision in five starts. He struck out one and walked two in his best performance since shutting out the Braves on April 19.

Braves 13, Cubs 3

CHICAGO - Vinny Castilla homered and drove in four runs as Atlanta extended its season-high winning streak to seven games. Greg Maddux (7-8) pitched six solid innings, and the Braves broke open the game with three runs in the sixth and five in the eighth.

Atlanta's Julio Franco was 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs.

Pirates 5, Brewers 4

MILWAUKEE - Pittsburgh's Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run homer and Jeff Suppan (8-7) gave up eight hits, walked none and struck out nine for a complete-game win.

Richie Sexson led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run and Milwaukee put a runner on second with two outs, but Suppan struck out Royce Clayton to end the game.

Keith Ginter hit two solo home runs for the Brewers.
