More complete-game magic from Mulder

American League

The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. - Mark Mulder pitched a five-hitter for his AL-leading seventh complete game and the Oakland Athletics defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-2 Thursday.

"A complete game is my goal every time out," said Mulder. "I want to finish what I start. I was getting a lot of quick outs and that definitely helped."

Mulder (12-6) tied Toronto's Roy Halladay and Atlanta's Russ Ortiz for the most wins in the majors and improved to 6-0 in six career starts against the Devil Rays.

Mulder is 11-1 in his last 16 starts in Oakland. He's 51-3 in 60 career starts when the A's score four or more runs.

Orioles 4, Mariners 1

SEATTLE - Sidney Ponson (12-5) pitched his fourth complete game of the season, and Luis Matos and David Segui homered as Baltimore won a series at Safeco Field for the first time. The Orioles are 3-16 at the Seattle ballpark that opened in mid-1999.

Indians 3, Yankees 2, 10 innings

CLEVELAND - Rookie Jody Gerut's RBI single scored Coco Crisp in the 10th inning with the game-winning run. The Indians won two of the three games with the Yankees and took their first home season series from New York since Jacobs Field opened in 1994.

Rangers 9, Twins 4

ARLINGTON, Texas - Juan Gonzalez homered twice, including a three-run shot in the first inning, and Texas totaled four home runs in completing a three-game sweep.

Michael Young added a three-run homer and rookie Mark Teixeira also connected for the Rangers.

Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO - David Ortiz and Kevin Millar hit back-to-back homers as Boston wrapped up a three-game sweep.

Ramiro Mendoza won his second straight start and Bill Mueller went 4-for-4 for the Red Sox, who lead the majors in batting average, runs, hits, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. The fading Blue Jays led the majors in those categories last month, but they've lost 10 of their last 12 games.

Angels 7, Royals 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Garret Anderson hit a pair of two-run homers, and Aaron Sele (6-6) won his third straight outing. Sele has allowed one run and nine hits over 15 innings since manager Mike Scioscia imposed a limit of five inning per start to make him pitch more aggressively early.

Tigers 1, White Sox 0

DETROIT - Nate Cornejo finished three outs short of his first career shutout, but Detroit earned its first home-series sweep of the season. Cornejo allowed seven hits before leaving after issuing a leadoff walk in the ninth to Frank Thomas.
