Reds third baseman Aaron Boone will return to the All-Star Game this year, but not as a spectator or the son of a player.

Adding to his family's rich baseball legacy, Boone became the record fourth member of his family selected to play in an All-Star Game Sunday.

National League manager Dusty Baker chose Boone over hot-hitting teammate Jose Guillen to be a reserve infielder for the July 15 game at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

"It's one of those things that happens that is very humbling," said Boone, who is hitting .267 with 16 doubles, 15 homers and 51 RBI this season. "It's a huge honor . . . Certainly, Jose has probably been our MVP of the first half. We all would have liked to have seen him get there."

Boone will not be alone in Chicago.

His brother Bret, the Mariners' second baseman, was chosen as a reserve for the American League. It will be Bret's third All-Star game.

They are the 14th set of All-Star brothers.

"Being in an All-Star game doesn't need much help, but that's going to be icing on the cake," Aaron said. "I'll get a chance to spend a couple days with him and take in all the festivities with him."

Aaron also is the fourth member of the Boone family - Bret, Reds manager and father Bob, and grandfather Ray Boone - to receive the honor.

Bob Boone played in the 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1983 All-Star games. Ray Boone played for the American League in 1954 and 1956.

"It's a real feeling of pride," said Bob Boone, who is thinking of driving to Chicago with wife Susan to watch the game. "A lot of guys could have gotten it. I wish everybody was doing a little better so we could send multiple guys at one time."
