They are a beat up ballclub in need of a break. Or better yet, reinforcements.
The assorted aches, pains and illnesses of a difficult first half of the season are beginning to pile up for the Reds and manager Bob Boone.
"We've been playing short-handed for two weeks, and today we really felt it," Boone said after a disheartening 7-5 loss to the Mets Sunday. "We're down to about 19 guys. That doesn't allow you to do much."
Hit hardest of late has been Cincinnati's bullpen.
The team's strength for much of the first half, it allowed the Mets to come back from three runs down and complete a three-game sweep before 31,054 fans Sunday at Great American Ball Park.
The loss dropped the Reds six games below .500 for the first time since April 29th.
They have lost 11 of their past 15 games, are 5 1/2 games behind the first-place Cardinals in the National League Central, and are in danger of falling behind the Pirates in the standings.
"We've just got to play better baseball," third baseman Aaron Boone said. "I guess as simple as that sounds, that's what it is.
"It's a tough time for us right now, but it's no time to pout about it. We can do something about it, that's the good thing."
Another good thing was the 11th quality start by pitcher Paul Wilson.
Wilson, working on three-days' rest for only the second time in his career, limited the Mets to a pair of home runs in seven innings of work.
Mindful of the four-man rotation, Boone removed Wilson from the game after 90 pitches and with the Reds ahead 5-2.
"I felt like I was aggressive, down in the zone," Wilson said. "I tried not to walk too many guys. I just let them put the bat on the ball.
"With a four-man rotation, when the boss says come out, I can argue until I'm blue in the face. But once he makes the decision, it's his decision."
Without Chris Reitsma, Scott Sullivan, Felix Heredia, Gabe White and Kent Mercker to choose from, Boone brought Todd Van Poppel on to start the eighth.
Van Poppel allowed two hits and three runs in 1/3 of an inning.
After retiring the first batter he faced, Mets third baseman Ty Wigginton hit a two-run double to tie the game at five.
Relief pitcher Brian Reith pitched the ninth and allowed two runs on a pair of doubles and a home run by Tony Clark.
"We've got a few guys down," Scott Williamson said. "But we've got a lot of guys that can fill their shoes. We've just got to get those guys healthy and get them back."
Less than a month remains before the trade deadline, and Reds general manager Jim Bowden continues his search for a starting pitcher in a difficult trade market.
"There are about 29 clubs looking for starting pitching," Bowden said. "There are a lot of teams in (pennant races) and a lot of teams that are out but don't want to trade the pitchers they do have."
The Reds refuse to consider parting with Austin Kearns or Adam Dunn.
"Are you going to trade one of those two guys who's going to be a star here for 10 years?" Bowden said. "For what? A pitcher making $6 million that may be a .500 pitcher? It doesn't make any sense.
"It's one thing if you're getting a Randy Johnson or a Curt Schilling or a guy that can win 18 to 20 games for a few years. That would probably make sense, but you're not going to get those kinds of guys in a trade."
The Reds expect to get some help in the near future as players get healthy and become available.
"We've got to put something together," Williamson said. "I think this is a point in the season, especially when you're losing, that you really have to pull together as a team and start finding something deep inside of you to get out of this."
Swept, sinking
The Reds were swept in a series for the third time this season.
They are 4-11 in the first 15 games of their 22-game stretch - 19 on the road - leading to the All-Star break.
The fourth-place Reds are now only one game ahead of the fifth-place Pirates.
