AL: Bosox bats pick up where they left off

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Boston is halfway to a massacre of its own. The Red Sox blew out the New York Yankees for the second straight day, hitting three more home runs and getting five shutout innings from Ramiro Mendoza (2-3) in a 10-2 win Saturday that brought them within two games of the AL East leader.

"Everybody knows we swing the bat," said David Ortiz, who homered twice for the second straight day.

Boston came to Yankee Stadium four games back Friday and has outscored New York 20-5 in halving its deficit, hitting 10 homers off a staff that had allowed a league-low 70 in its first 83 games.

Andy Pettitte tries to stop New York's skid today against John Burkett. Boston then has Pedro Martinez going in the series finale against Mike Mussina.

Roger Clemens (8-6) took the loss.

Devil Rays 3, White Sox 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Lou Piniella is going blond.

Saturday night's victory over Chicago gave Tampa Bay its first three-game winning streak since Sept. 19-21. Piniella will be sporting a new hairdo by the time the team takes the field today.

Javier Valentin hit a solo homer and Jorge Sosa (2-6) won for the first time since April.

"The guy will be here tomorrow morning and by game time I'll be a blond. That's what they want. That's what they'll get," Piniella said.

Tigers 9, Royals 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Dmitri Young and Kevin Witt hit solo home runs and Alex Sanchez drove in three runs with his first homer in 307 at-bats as Detroit beat Kansas City.

Mike Maroth (4-12) got the win.

Indians 13, Twins 2

MINNEAPOLIS - Casey Blake went 5-for-5 with two homers and seven RBI against his former team, leading Cleveland past Minnesota. Matt Lawton - another former Twin - and Milton Bradley homered for the Indians.

Angels 6, Athletics 3

OAKLAND, Calif. - Tim Salmon homered twice and Ramon Ortiz (10-6) won for the sixth time in seven starts.

It was Salmon's second multihomer game this year, both against the A's.

Orioles 9, Blue Jays 2

BALTIMORE - Jeff Conine hit two homers and drove in five runs, and Sidney Ponson pitched eight strong innings to earn his 11th win for Baltimore.

Mariners 3, Rangers 2, 10 innings

ARLINGTON, Texas - Dan Wilson's RBI single with one out in the 10th inning lifted the Seattle past Texas.

Rafael Soriano (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first major-league victory. Ugueth Urbina fell to 0-4.

Shigetoshi Hasegawa got three outs for his third save.
