BOSTON - Pedro Martinez finally got a win, hardly shocking since he faced the lowly Detroit Tigers.
The Red Sox ace picked up his first victory since May 15 as Boston completed a sweep of baseball's worst team Thursday, 6-4.
Martinez (5-2) had trouble with the location of his pitches and allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings against a team with a .225 batting average, the lowest in the majors. He struck out eight and allowed seven hits and three walks.
The loss was the Tigers' sixth straight, and it dropped them to 18-58. They were outscored 30-8 in the series.
Frustration boiled over in the fifth when Bobby Higginson and rookie manager Alan Trammell were ejected by plate umpire Bill Miller for arguing a called third strike.
"With the frustration that's been building up here for a while, I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary," Trammell said after his first ejection as a manager.
Higginson thought Miller gave Martinez a larger strike zone.
"Pedro's obviously going to get a little extra," Higginson said, "but we're a bad club right now. Nobody's helping us."
Martinez didn't comment after the game. A team spokesman said he wasn't feeling well after throwing 110 pitches in a game that started with the temperature at 83 degrees.
Blue Jays 13, Orioles 8
TORONTO - Carlos Delgado homered twice to increase his American League-leading total to 25 for Toronto. He tied his season high with five RBI and has driven in a major league-best 86 runs.
Tom Wilson, who had a career-high four hits, also homered for the Blue Jays.
Royals 4, Indians 1
CLEVELAND - Jose Lima allowed five hits and one run in seven innings to lead Kansas City to a three-game sweep.
Rookie Aaron Guiel, filling in at first base for injured Mike Sweeney, hit a two-run homer and scored twice for the Royals, who improved to 24-6 in games within their division.
Yankees 4, Devil Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - New York's Jason Giambi and Raul Mondesi hit two-run homers to back the pitching of starter Mike Mussina. Newly acquired reliever Dan Miceli came in with the tying runs on base in the bottom of the eighth and worked out of the jam to help the Yankees maintain their two-game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East.
White Sox 5, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS - Mark Buehrle won his third straight start, pitching a five-hitter for Chicago. He struck out a career-high nine batters and walked two.
Buehrle lost his shutout bid on Corey Koskie's RBI double in the ninth inning.
