CHICAGO - Jose Hernandez returned to the Chicago Cubs on Friday, reuniting with his friend Sammy Sosa and hoping to provide some punch to the lineup.
Hernandez was with the Cubs from 1994 until he was traded to Atlanta late in the 1999 season. His play at shortstop in 1998, when he hit 23 homers and drove in 75 runs, helped Chicago win the NL wild card that season.
He spent three seasons with Milwaukee, making the All-Star team last year, and had appeared in 69 games with the Rockies before he was traded Thursday for Mark Bellhorn and Double-A pitcher Travis Anderson.
Hernandez can play all the infield positions but probably will get most of his playing time at third, where the Cubs have been shuffling this season. They've used Bellhorn, Ramon Martinez and Lenny Harris at the position.
GIANTS: Promising San Francisco rookie pitcher Kurt Ainsworth might be out much longer than the Giants anticipated with an injured right shoulder.
Ainsworth left his rehab start Wednesday at Triple-A Fresno because of stiffness in the area behind his throwing shoulder. He was scheduled to throw 70 or 80 pitches, but came out after only 34.
The pitcher will get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.
The Giants had thought Ainsworth had sufficient rest and was ready to return.
CANSECO ARRESTED: Jose Canseco was arrested at his home Friday after testing positive for steroids, a violation of his probation stemming from a nightclub brawl.
The former American League MVP, who had been under house arrest for earlier violating probation, was being held at Broward County Jail without bond pending a court appearance. He'll probably face a hearing Monday or Tuesday, officials said.
Canseco, who retired from baseball last year, was charged with his twin brother, Ozzie, for the 2001 brawl in Miami Beach. Jose Canseco was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty last year.
Canseco already violated his probation by leaving Florida for several weeks and failing to start community service and anger-management classes.
SHORT HOPS: Outfielder Anthony Gwynn, the son of baseball great Tony Gwynn, signed Friday with the Milwaukee Brewers and was assigned to Single-A Beloit of the Midwest League. He and his father will visit Miller Park for a workout prior to the Brewers-Minnesota Twins game tonight.
Tampa Bay Devil Rays shortstop Rey Ordonez could miss the remainder of the season with a torn ligament in his left knee. The tear was diagnosed Friday. Ordonez has been on the disabled list since May 9 with a sprained knee.
Nick Johnson had the cast removed from his injured right hand Friday and is expected to return to the New York Yankees in three to four weeks. Johnson had a stress fracture in his right hand.
Milwaukee sent Glendon Rusch to Triple-A Indianapolis Friday after the left-hander lost 10 straight games - one shy of the Brewers' club record. Rusch was 1-11 with an 8.61 ERA.
