ATLANTA - Robert Fick hit a grand slam and Greg Maddux pitched no-hit ball into the sixth inning, lifting the Atlanta Braves to a 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.
Fick drove in five runs, matching his career high. His second grand slam of the season came in the fourth against Baltimore's Sidney Ponson, who lost for only the second time in his last 10 starts.
"I was just trying not to hit into a double play," Fick said of the slam. "I didn't even look at it. I knew I hit it pretty good, good enough to at least get one run in."
Maddux (6-6) didn't give up a hit until Brian Roberts doubled into the right-field corner with two outs in the sixth. The right-hander surrendered an unearned run in the seventh and left after the first two hitters reached base in the eighth. Both scored when former Brave B.J. Surhoff singled against Ray King.
But Kevin Gryboski, Jung Bong and John Smoltz shut down the Orioles the rest of the way. Smoltz, pitching one day after taking his first loss in more than a year, worked a scoreless ninth for his 27th save in 29 chances.
Baltimore's Melvin Mora, the leading hitter in the American League at .361, left the game after being hit on the right hand with a pitch in the first.
Mora already was striding when Maddux's pitch drifted inside and struck his hand. After being treated, Mora went to first base and stayed in the game defensively for the bottom half of the inning.
Tigers 7, Rockies 5
DENVER - Eric Munson, Bobby Higginson and Kevin Witt homered as Detroit snapped a four-game losing streak.
Alex Sanchez had three hits for the Tigers. Munson and Witt were among four Detroit players with two hits.
Mike Maroth (2-11) won for the first time in four starts.
Brewers 3, Twins 2, 10 innings
MILWAUKEE - Royce Clayton scored on a wild pitch by reliever Juan Rincon with one out in the 10th inning to win it for Milwaukee.
Clayton led off the 10th with a double to right-center off Rincon (1-3) and advanced to third on pinch-hitter Brooks Kieschnick's fly to deep center. Rincon then bounced his second pitch to Eric Young past catcher A.J. Pierzynski, allowing Clayton to score easily.
Reliever Curtis Leskanic (4-0) pitched out of a jam in the top of the 10th after Luis Rivas reached third with one out.
Royals 10, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS - Jose Lima earned his first major-league win since Aug. 19, 2002, and Kansas City got four RBI from Ken Harvey.
Raul Ibanez went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Royals, who have won five of their last six games. Desi Relaford homered on the second pitch of the game, and Harvey and Angel Berroa also connected for Kansas City.
Royals pitchers controlled Albert Pujols, who entered with a .471 average, two homers and 10 RBI in nine career games against Kansas City. Pujols was 0-for-5.
Marlins 3, Devil Rays 1, 11 innings
MIAMI - Miguel Cabrera, playing in his first major-league game, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Florida. Alex Gonzalez doubled with one out in the 11th, and the 20-year-old Cabrera sent the next pitch from Al Levine over the center-field wall.
Cabrera, the most highly touted prospect in the Marlins' organization, was called up from Double-A Carolina on Thursday. He played primarily at third base in the minor leagues but started in left field Friday.
Astros 12, Rangers 3
ARLINGTON, Texas - Craig Biggio had four hits and Adam Everett homered as Houston sent Texas to its fifth straight loss.
Alex Rodriguez homered for the Rangers, who have lost 17 of their last 19 games - their worst stretch since also going 2-17 from Aug. 5-25, 1973.
Yankees 5, Mets 0
NEW YORK - Andy Pettitte shut down the New York Mets for seven innings and the Yankees got consecutive home runs from Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter to win the opener of the Subway Series.
Jason Giambi also homered for the Yankees, who beat the Mets for the 19th time in 31 regular-season meetings.
The Yankees have won seven of eight overall since being no-hit by six Houston pitchers on June 11. They moved 1 1/2 games in front of Boston and Toronto in the AL East.
The sellout crowd of 55,386 sat through sporadic rain which was heavy at times, with the Yankees fans who made the trip to Shea Stadium vocal in support of their team.
Steve Trachsel (5-5), coming off his second career one-hitter Sunday in Anaheim, held the Yankees in check except for the third inning. He allowed two runs, five hits and five walks in seven innings.
Soriano, coming off a 7-for-39 homestand, hit the second pitch of the third into the left-field bullpen for his 19th homer. Jeter followed with a drive over the center-field fence for his fourth of the season.
The Yankees didn't get anything else until Ruben Sierra's RBI double in the eighth inning against Graeme Lloyd. Giambi added a two-run shot in the ninth off Armando Benitez.
White Sox 12, Cubs 3
CHICAGO - Miguel Olivo's grand slam capped a six-run first inning as the White Sox won the crosstown rivals' most lopsided game since interleague play in 1997.
The White Sox made the most of wild Cubs pitching - 10 walks - and some shaky defense to pull away early.
Sammy Sosa, in his first home game since serving a seven-game suspension for using a corked bat, was mostly cheered when introduced although some fans mixed in a very noticeable share of boos.
He also had trouble with the sun in right field, losing one ball and trapping another during a four-run White Sox fourth. He was 0-for-4 with a walk.
Chicago starter Shawn Estes (6-6) couldn't find the plate and lasted just one inning. He walked four, gave up two hits and six runs in his shortest outing since going an inning for the Reds against the Cubs last September.
Blue Jays 8, Expos 4
MONTREAL - Vernon Wells, Frank Catalanotto, Orlando Hudson and Greg Myers homered as Toronto extended its winning streak to four games.
Cory Lidle (10-4) allowed three hits in seven innings, joining teammate Roy Halladay to give the Blue Jays the majors' first pair of 10-game winners.
Endy Chavez hit an inside-the-park home run for Montreal, which played its first game at Olympic Stadium since May 25 before a crowd of 11,355.
Red Sox-Phillies postponed
PHILADELPHIA - Rain knocked out the series opener between Boston and Philadelphia but had no effect on Pedro Martinez's scheduled start. Martinez (4-2) will pitch on his regular day, this afternoon against Randy Wolf.
