Dunn sitting out 2 games; Casey appeals

Reds still awaiting word on suspensions for Cubs brawl

PHOENIX - Adam Dunn was in the penalty box Friday night. Sean Casey is on deck.

Both were suspended for their parts in a brawl with the Philadelphia Phillies last week.

Dunn got three games. The time was reduced to two games on the condition he begin serving it immediately.

Casey also got three games. He is appealing - his also almost certainly will be reduced - and he'll begin serving it Tuesday when the Reds open a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Reds general manager Jim Bowden worked out a deal on the suspensions with Bob Watson, Major League Baseball's vice president of on-field operations.

"I knew it was coming," Dunn said. "I just wanted to get it over with. If it was something ridiculous, I would have appealed."

Casey sees his as ridiculous - thus the appeal.

"I guess they looked at the tape," Casey said. "I was going out there to break it up. I was doing that until (Carlos) Silva took a big-time sucker punch at Dunner."

On the Phillies' side, Silva, who threw at Dunn to start the whole thing, got six games. Manager Larry Bowa got one game, and Todd Pratt and Jose Mesa were fined.

Dunn and Casey were also fined, but the amounts were not announced. The suspensions leave the Reds short-handed in a critical stretch.

"The only thing I regret is hesitating," Dunn said.

His momentary hesitation allowed Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal to tackle him and not get to Silva.

The tackle led Casey to do what he did.

"When I got out there, Lieberthal and David Bell were laying on Dunn's legs holding him down," Casey said. "Silva was swinging at him. It's not baseball then. I was trying to protect a friend. The circumstances warrant what I did."

The Reds, of course, were involved in another brawl Thursday - this time with the Chicago Cubs.

Paul Wilson was the principle in Thursday's fight for the Reds. He was the only one ejected for the Reds. Kyle Farnsworth was ejected for the Cubs.

If Watson rules similarly, Wilson and Farnsworth will be the only ones suspended.

Three games seems to be the standard for fighting.
