Braves stifle Phils behind sharp Ortiz

National League Roundup

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Russ Ortiz pitched six shutout innings and Robert Fick had three RBI, leading Atlanta past Kevin Millwood and Philadelphia 6-1.

Gary Sheffield added a two-run homer for the Braves, who improved the NL's best record to 46-23.

Facing his former team for the first time, Millwood (8-5) allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings. It was his fourth loss in five starts, and he has given up 12 runs and 19 hits in his last two outings.

Ortiz (8-4) allowed four hits, struck out three and walked three for his first win in four starts.

Mets 10, Marlins 5

MIAMI - Jose Reyes had a bases-loaded triple, a double and four RBI for New York, and Al Leiter won for the fourth time in his last five starts.

The Mets had 13 hits, six of them for extra bases, and batted around in the second and fifth innings.

Leiter (8-3) gave up five runs on six hits in six innings. Graeme Lloyd gave up two hits in a scoreless inning of relief while Dan Wheeler struck out two in three scoreless innings.

Brad Penny (5-5) gave up eight runs on 10 hits. He is 0-7 lifetime against the Mets.

The Mets led 5-3 before scoring five times in the fifth inning. Cliff Floyd and Jeromy Burnitz both hit RBI doubles, chasing Penny. Reyes then hit a bases-loaded triple off reliever Kevin Olsen.

Florida's Alex Gonzalez, who had four RBI, hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

The Marlins scored three runs in the first inning. Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo led off with consecutive singles. Pierre scored on Mike Redmond's single to center. With two outs, Gonzalez drove in two runs with a bloop single to left field to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead.

Pierre had two bunt singles, giving him 10 for the season.

The Mets came back in the second inning. Burnitz and Vance Wilson each singled. Burnitz scored on Jason Phillips' single, then Reyes drove in a run with a double. Roger Cedeno's two-out double drove in two more runs. Ty Wigginton drove in Cedeno with a single and the Mets led 5-3.

Pirates 7, Expos 3 (1st)

PITTSBURGH - Aramis Ramirez, Kenny Lofton and Reggie Sanders homered in the first game of a doubleheader, and Pittsburgh finally reached the double-digit mark in home wins.

The Pirates bunched five singles in a span of six batters during a decisive three-run fourth inning against Livan Hernandez (6-5) to win their third in a row. Montreal matched its longest losing streak this season by losing its fifth straight.

Pittsburgh needed 31 games to do so, but finally became the last NL team to reach the 10-win mark in home victories. The Pirates are 10-21 at PNC Park. Only the Tigers, who went into Wednesday night's game against Cleveland with a 6-27 home mark, have fewer home victories in the majors.

Jeff D'Amico (5-7) ended his three-game losing streak, limiting the Expos to six hits and two runs in six innings. He is 3-0 against Montreal the last two seasons, winning twice with the Mets last season.

The Expos put runners on first and second with one out in the ninth against Pirates reliever Scott Sauerbeck, but Mike Williams came on to get the final two outs for his 19th save in 22 opportunities.
