Monday's games: Marlins rookie throws 1-hitter

The Associated Press

MIAMI - Dontrelle Willis and his unusual delivery baffled the New York Mets.

Willis pitched a one-hitter to win his fifth straight as the Florida Marlins beat the Mets 1-0 Monday night behind a homer by Ivan Rodriguez.

Willis (6-1) allowed only a clean line-drive single to left by Ty Wigginton with one out in the fourth to win his fifth straight start.

"He has a funky delivery. His arm angle helps him and his pitch location was very good," New York outfielder Jeromy Burnitz said of the rookie.

Willis outlasted veteran Tom Glavine (5-7), who allowed just five hits, including Rodriguez's homer, in seven innings.

"I was hoping to keep making pitches and hope that his youth and enthusiasm would cause him to make a mistake," Glavine said.

Glavine missed his last scheduled start with a sore left elbow. He has lost five of six decisions but said he felt good after Monday's game.

Brewers 9, Cardinals 4

MILWAUKEE - Keith Osik hit a solo homer and two-run double in Milwaukee's seven-run seventh inning as the Brewers rallied past St. Louis.

Osik led off the seventh with his first homer since Aug. 21, 2002, and capped the club's biggest inning this season with a two-run double down the third-base line.

Curtis Leskanic (3-0) picked up the win. Cal Eldred (3-2) took the loss.

Padres 7, Rockies 5

DENVER - Mark Loretta hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Jose Jimenez as San Diego beat Colorado.

The Rockies scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-4 lead, but Jimenez (0-3) couldn't hold it. Jay Witasick (1-1) got the final two outs of the eighth inning for the win.

American League

White Sox 4, Red Sox 2

CHICAGO - Mark Buehrle (3-10) won for the first time in 13 starts and Joe Crede hit a three-run homer as the Chicago White Sox capitalized on Boston's bullpen after Pedro Martinez left the game to beat the Red Sox.

The White Sox, held to one run in five innings against Martinez, broke through in a three-run sixth against Ryan Rupe (1-1). Martinez, making his second start since coming off the disabled list, left after 71 pitches as Boston tries to ease him back into form.

Royals 9, Twins 8

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Raul Ibanez singled home Carlos Beltran in the ninth inning as the Kansas City Royals blew an eight-run lead and still beat Minnesota.

Eddie Guardado (0-2) took the loss. Mike MacDougal (3-3) got the win despite allowing three runs and four hits in the ninth.

Mariners 6, Angels 3

SEATTLE - John Olerud homered for his 2,000th career hit and Mike Cameron hit two home runs as Seattle beat Anaheim.

At 46-22, the Mariners have the best record in baseball.
