Baseball history has shown that it takes a character to come into games late to shut the door. For the Reds, that character is fireballer Scott Williamson. Enquirer reporter Kevin Kelly recently attempted to delve into the mind of the closer.
1. If you could have a meal with anybody, dead or alive, who would it be?
Probably Robert E. Lee because he's the best general of all time. Either him or Stonewall Jackson. I think they're the best ever. They were big-time underdogs in the Civil War. They obviously lost because the North had so many more people. Just their casualties compared to the North's casualties and how they fought shows how awesome they were.
2. Did you have a favorite pitcher growing up?
Nolan Ryan. He only lives about 10 minutes from where I grew up. I played ball with Reese Ryan, his son. I met him when I was in high school.
3. When was the first time somebody noticed you as a major-league baseball player?
Probably my rookie season in Cincinnati. Me and my buddy were checking out at a Wal-Mart in Montgomery and they were selling baseball cards and my picture was on the front.
This lady is like, "Hey, you look familiar." It was funny because she couldn't picture me, but she thought she knew who I was and my picture was sitting right there beside her. And my buddy looks over at the cards and was like, "He kinda looks like that guy." She looked over and said, "Yeah, he does kinda look like that guy, but he's not." Then she looked a little bit more and figured out it was me, and then all of a sudden I had this big line of people trying to get autographs.
4. Do you believe in UFO's?
I do. There's no proof that there's not and there's no proof that there is. So I think it's everybody's opinion. Why would we be just the only people in this whole universe? It's a big universe, so why shouldn't there be?
5. What was the most embarrassing moment of your life?
Probably playing football when I was younger. I was running back a punt return, and I was breaking free for a touchdown and a guy grabbed my pants and they went all the way to my ankles. There was this cheerleader girl and it happened right in front of her. I'm pulling this guy, and all I've got is my underwear on. But I ran for a touchdown. I had time to pick up my pants and hold them in one hand and waddle into the end zone.
