No shortage of no-hitter facts
The Astros' six-pitcher no-hitter of the Yankees brought to mind some Reds no-hit facts. A look:
There have been 16 no-hitters in Reds history, including three of more than nine innings. Two of those were by fireballer Jim Maloney.
Maloney is the Reds' leader with three no-hitters. On June 14, 1965, he pitched 10 no-hit innings against New York before allowing two hits in the 11th and losing 1-0. Two months later, he no-hit Chicago for 10 innings and won 1-0. His third no-hitter came in 1969.
Johnny Vander Meer is the only major-leaguer to pitch back-to-back no-hitters. He no-hit Boston on June 11, 1938, and then no-hit Brooklyn on June 15.
Tom Seaver pitched the only no-hitter of his illustrious career as a Red, beating St. Louis on June 16, 1978.
Tom Browning pitched the franchise's only perfect game, on Sept. 16, 1988, against Los Angeles.
Remember him?
Much has been made about the Reds trading their top starter, Elmer Dessens, in the offseason.
Though he is tied for the Diamondbacks' lead in wins at four, he hasn't pitched well.
Dessens is 4-4 with a 5.29 ERA, allowing 95 hits in 79 innings. He has walked 28 and struck out 47 and allowed a team-high 14 home runs.
Sweep, swept
The Reds' three-game sweep of the Devil Rays was their first of the season. Here is how the Reds break down by series:
Won 11, lost 10, split none, swept two (a four-game sweep of St. Louis is the other), and were swept twice.
By the numbers (Entering Saturday)
7: Reds who have had multiple-home run games - Aaron Boone 3, Adam Dunn 2, Ken Griffey Jr. 2, Austin Kearns, Sean Casey, Jose Guillen and Jason LaRue.
0: Runs allowed by the bullpen the past three games (10 IP, 3 saves).
31-18: Reds' record when hitting at least one home run.
3-14: Record in games in which they don't homer.
20-5: Record of Reds relievers.
14-27: Record of Reds starters.
23-1: Reds' record when having the lead after seven innings.
3-30: Reds' record when trailing after eight innings.
