Reds notebook: Haynes gets quality start he needs

With Riedling on DL, rotation down to 10 pitchers

That 0-5 record and 8.91 ERA next to Jimmy Haynes' name on the stat sheet was becoming burdensome for the Reds right-hander.

"You tote that out there with you," Haynes said. "That's definitely not the way you want to start the year."

The next time Haynes takes the mound his load will be a bit lighter after he pitched a complete-game three-hitter Friday night in the Reds' 15-1 victory over the Phillies to pick up his first victory of the season and lower his ERA to a bloated, but improving, 7.27.

It was the Reds' second complete game of the season.

Haynes won 15 games last year and was good enough to earn the Reds' Opening Day start this season, but a bulging disc reduced his effectiveness and put him on the disabled list from April 17 to May 27. Friday's start was his fourth since he was activated, and only now is he getting back to where he was last year.

"That's the Jimmy Haynes from last year," said Reds manager Bob Boone. "That's how he did it."

Haynes kept his fastball down, pitched inside and had good control and movement on his curve.

"I've just been trying to get myself back to the way I know I can pitch," Haynes said. "It's coming around. Hopefully it will stay where it's at right now."

RIEDLING TO DL: John Riedling was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow tendinitis Friday. Shortstop Barry Larkin was activated to take his spot.

Riedling gave up six runs in four innings in his last start at Tampa Bay on Wednesday, blowing a 6-0 lead.

"It wouldn't do them any good or me any good by going out there," Riedling said.

Riedling, a 27-year-old right-hander, said the elbow has been bothering him for six weeks.

An MRI Friday revealed the tendinitis but no structural damage.

Riedling's stay probably won't extend beyond the 15 days.

NO. 2 LARKIN: Larkin was in the lineup at shortstop and hit second.

"Skip (Boone) called me in and asked where I wanted to hit," Larkin said. "I said ninth. He said, 'The pitcher's hitting there.' I said 'Then my preference is second.' "

So Adam Dunn hit leadoff for the 10th time. Dunn went into Friday hitting .121 in those nine games, dropping his average to .199.

He had walked nine times and scored seven runs.

Dunn bunted his first time up Friday - back to the pitcher for an out. In his next at-bat in the third inning, he hit his 21st home run.

Larkin, who has been out since May 22 with a strained right calf muscle, is cleared to play as he normally would.

"I hope this is all behind me," he said. "Obviously I've got to go out and play and see what happens."

Larkin was out from April 14 to May 6 with a strained left calf.

ROSTER MOVE: The roster move the Reds made Friday, putting Riedling on the DL, saved Felipe Lopez or Rainer Olmedo from a trip to Triple-A Louisville.

But another move is forthcoming, because the Reds are down to 10 pitchers.

"(Pitching coach Don Gullett) and I look at us as a 12-man staff," Boone said.

Riedling was scheduled to start Monday. The Reds could move Chris Reitsma back into the rotation. He has pitched extremely well (no runs in his last four appearances) out of the bullpen recently.

Another choice: Felix Heredia. He has gone, 3, 3 and 2 1/3 innings in his last three appearances, allowing two runs total.

At Triple-A, Jimmy Anderson is 6-1 with a 3.12 ERA. Seth Etherton is 4-4 with a 3.82 ERA and is coming off a good outing.

GRAVES UPDATE: Right-hander Danny Graves (3-5, 5.31 ERA) returns to the rotation today. Graves skipped a turn because of a blood blister on his right middle finger.
