Wagner, Astros are streaking

Interleague roundup

The Associated Press

HOUSTON - Billy Wagner set the Astros' record for saves and promptly thanked Todd Jones.

"When I first came up, they wanted me to start," Wagner said. "If it hadn't have been for Todd Jones going on the DL that year, I might never have gotten a chance to close. Thanks to Jonesy for getting me started."

Wagner pitched a one-hit ninth inning Sunday that completed Houston's seventh straight win, a three-hit, 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

It was his 200th save, one more than Dave Smith's previous team record.

Wagner has 19 saves in 20 chances, converting his last 15 opportunities.

The Astros have a one game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

Cubs 8, Yankees 7

CHICAGO - Sammy Sosa capped a tumultuous weekend with his 2,000th career hit, and Mark Prior showed the New York Yankees what they missed out on five years ago.

Prior struck out 10 in six innings and Moises Alou and Ramon Martinez homered as the Chicago Cubs held on to beat the Yankees to take two of three in the teams' first meeting since the 1938 World Series.

Giants 7, Tigers 6

SAN FRANCISCO - Pinch-hitter Edgardo Alfonzo had a tiebreaking double with two outs in the eighth inning as San Francisco rallied to complete a three-game sweep.

The NL West-leading Giants wrapped up their season-long 12-game homestand with a 9-3 record.

Phillies 7-8, Athletics 1-3

PHILADELPHIA - Jim Thome and Bobby Abreu each homered and drove in two runs as the Phillies finished a doubleheader sweep with an 8-3 victory.

Kevin Millwood pitched seven strong innings in the opener and Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer to help Philadelphia snap a four-game losing streak with a 7-1 win. The Phillies begin a six-game road trip in Anaheim tonight.

Padres 9, Twins 4

SAN DIEGO - Mark Loretta had four hits, including a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning as San Diego rallied.

Ryan Klesko and Brian Buchanan each added a two-run homer to complete a six-run outburst in the eighth against LaTroy Hawkins (4-1) and Mike Nakamura.

Angels 8, Marlins 5

MIAMI - Adam Kennedy and Garret Anderson had run-scoring singles in a three-run fifth inning and the Angels took advantage of an error to rally from a four-run deficit.

It was the 12th come-from-behind victory this season for the Angels.

Red Sox 9, Brewers 1

MILWAUKEE - Kevin Millar homered twice and drove in four runs, backing a strong outing by Derek Lowe.

Millar batted .387 (12-for-31) as the Red Sox went 5-7 on their road trip.

"It's just a situation where I got some good at-bats going and that carried me over," Millar said. "I got my stroke back and it feels good."

Expos 3, Rangers 2

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Brad Wilkerson's second run-scoring double broke a tie in the eighth inning and helped Montreal send Texas to its ninth straight loss.

The Expos finished their second Puerto Rican homestand with four straight wins - all after losing All-Star Vladimir Guerrero with a herniated disc in his back.

The win was the 800th for Expos manager Frank Robinson.

Mariners 13-7, Mets 1-0

NEW YORK - Jamie Moyer became the majors' first 10-game winner and the Mariners beat the New York Mets 7-0 to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Ichiro Suzuki got four hits in the 13-1 victory in the opener and led off the second game with a bunt single and scored, then hit an RBI single the next inning.

Cardinals 11, Orioles 10

ST. LOUIS - Scott Rolen hit a tiebreaking grand slam and Jim Edmonds drove in three runs on two homers, powering St. Louis.

White Sox 10, Dodgers 3

LOS ANGELES - Frank Thomas hit a two-run homer, and Tony Graffanino had a two-run double during a five-run fifth inning that carried Chicago. The two-time AL MVP was 6-for-9 with a pair of home runs in his first series at Dodger Stadium, and is 17-for-36 since manager Jerry Manuel took him out of the DH role.

Diamondbacks 13, Indians 3

PHOENIX - Robbie Hammock had four hits, including a pair of triples that tied a team record, to lead Arizona.

Rockies 8, Royals 7

DENVER - Charles Johnson's RBI double drove in Chris Stynes, producing a two-run lead, and the Colorado Rockies held on for the victory to avoid a three-game sweep.
