ST. LOUIS - The Baltimore Orioles made sure to take a good look at pitcher Sidney Ponson in that St. Louis Browns throwback uniform.
"I think everybody laughed," Ponson said. "They told me I looked like an old player. I'm kind of big, chubby."
The 6-foot-1, 249-pound Ponson pitched his second complete game in three starts, leading the Orioles past the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 Saturday.
Deivi Cruz hit two home runs, and Melvin Mora and Jeff Conine also homered for Baltimore, which snapped a four-game skid and ended the Cardinals' five-game winning streak.
"It helps having a guy like Sidney on the mound," Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove said. "Everybody likes to have a stopper and Sidney has kind of become ours. Hopefully, that continues."
The former city rivals wore old-style jerseys - with the Orioles donning Browns uniforms - to commemorate the only all-St. Louis World Series in 1944. The Browns left to become the Baltimore Orioles after the 1953 season.
The Cardinals wore the '44 home whites while the Orioles wore the gray road uniform of the Browns. The Cardinals won that World Series in six games.
Cruz's second career two-homer game gave him seven homers this season. Cruz went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI in the series opener Friday night.
Ponson (8-3) allowed seven hits, struck out eight and walked two for his 20th career complete game and second this season.
Red Sox 11, Brewers 10
MILWAUKEE - Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek hit consecutive homers off Mike DeJean in the ninth inning for Boston.
Pinch hitter Kevin Millar had a grand slam for the Red Sox, who lost starter Casey Fossum to a sore shoulder after one inning but came back from a pair of six-run deficits.
Boston won for only the fourth time in 12 games and moved within a half-game of the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.
Expos 5, Rangers 4
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Brad Wilkerson took advantage of the short fences at Hiram Bithorn Stadium to homer twice, helping Montreal hand Texas its eighth straight loss.
Jose Vidro also homered for Montreal, a legitimate shot off the advertisements beyond the right-field bleachers, as the Expos won their third straight game.
Diamondbacks 5, Indians 3
PHOENIX - Shea Hillenbrand hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, rallying Arizona past former Diamondback Brian Anderson.
Junior Spivey gave the Diamondbacks, who trailed 3-0, a 5-3 lead with an RBI double off Terry Mulholland in the seventh.
Alex Cintron, who started two rallies with leadoff singles, and Robby Hammock had sacrifice flies.
Stephen Randolph (1-0) allowed three walks but no hits or runs in two innings of relief. Andrew Good pitched two scoreless innings.
Royals 13-9, Rockies 11-5
DENVER - Mike Sweeney hit a two-run double and Aaron Guiel had a career-high four hits as Kansas completed its first doubleheader sweep on the road in 12 years.
Sweeney's grand slam in the opener carried Kansas City to a 13-11 victory. He finished with four hits and six RBI on the day.
Carlos Beltran had a two-run homer and three RBI in the nightcap. The Royals had 30 hits in the two games for their first doubleheader sweep away from home since Aug. 13, 1991, at Yankee Stadium.
D.J. Carrasco, making his first major-league start, went 4 1/3 innings in the second game, allowing four hits and two runs. Jason Gilfillan (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for his first career win, and Mike MacDougal retired Greg Norton with the bases loaded to end it.
Giants 7, Tigers 5
SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds hit one of San Francisco's four home runs and Jason Schmidt pitched seven strong innings.
Andres Galarraga, Jose Cruz Jr. and Marquis Grissom also homered for the Giants, who improved to 8-3 on their season-long 12-game homestand. They wrap it up today with a chance to sweep the struggling Tigers.
Bonds' two-run homer in the eighth gave him 628 for his career and 15 this season. The 41-year-old Galarraga connected two batters later for his fourth homer of the year and career shot No. 390.
Angels 9, Marlins 2
MIAMI - Garret Anderson homered for the sixth time in five games and Aaron Sele won his second consecutive start.
Anderson, who had three home runs against Montreal on Wednesday, hit a three-run shot in the fourth inning off Tommy Phelps. It was Anderson's sixth home run on the Angels' road trip and his 13th of the year.
