South Carolina edges North Carolina in super regionals

By The Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Landon Powell homered and drove in three runs, and Michael Campbell hit a go-ahead two-run single as South Carolina beat North Carolina 5-4 in the opening game of the super regionals Friday.

Gamecocks ace David Marchbanks (15-2) allowed four runs in the first two innings, but held the Tar Heels to two hits over the next four innings. Chris Hernandez got his second save of the season after allowing two hits in three innings.

With South Carolina (43-20) trailing 4-3 in the fourth, Kevin Melillo and Nick Gardiner led off with singles. Jon Coutlangus sacrificed the runners over, and Campbell followed with a two-run single.

"Sometimes you've got to step up and make the big hit," Campbell said. "I knew I wasn't going to go down with runners on second and third in this super regional."

Wes Moyer went 2-for-4 with a homer for North Carolina (42-22).

"We always have confidence in ourselves, it just didn't happen today the way we'd like it," North Carolina outfielder Jeremy Cleveland said.

The teams meet again Saturday in the best-of-three series, and South Carolina could clinch its second straight College World Series berth with a victory.

In other games Friday, Cal State Fullerton beat Arizona State 5-1 and Baylor defeated Louisiana State 4-1; and Stanford topped Long Beach State 5-1.

The other four super regionals were scheduled to start Saturday, with Texas (46-18) at Florida State (54-11-1); North Carolina State (45-16) at Miami (42-15-1); Houston (36-28) at Rice (51-10); and Southwest Missouri State (38-24) at Ohio State (44-19).

FULLERTON, Calif. - Jason Windsor and Chad Cordero combined on a five-hitter as Cal State Fullerton beat Arizona State in the first game of their super regional.

The Sun Devils entered leading Division I with a .352 batting average and 10.35 runs per game, but Windsor (10-2), a junior walk-on, scattered five hits, allowed one run, struck out five and walked one in seven innings. Cordero pitched two perfect innings to seal the win.

Ronnie Prettyman drove in two runs with a triple, and Jason Corapci and Shane Costa each hit run-scoring singles in a four-run second for the Titans (47-13).

Tuffy Gosewich hit an RBI single in the fifth for Arizona State (53-13).

Baylor 4, LSU 1

BATON ROUGE, La. - Steven White scattered seven hits and struck out nine in eight innings, and Chris Durbin's RBI single keyed a three-run eighth as Baylor beat Louisiana State.

White (9-4) walked two and allowed one run, and Ryan LaMotta got three outs as Baylor (45-21) beat LSU (43-20-1) for the first time in five meetings. The Bears have won 17 of their last 21.

Tied 1-1 in the eighth, the Bears got five of their 10 hits and scored three times. Durbin and Josh Ford both had RBI singles, and Mark Saccomanno hit an RBI double.

Ryan Patterson tied it at 1-1 in the fourth with an RBI double.

Stanford 5, Long Beach St. 1

STANFORD, Calif. - John Hudgins pitched a seven-hitter, and Danny Putnam hit a three-run homer as Stanford topped Long Beach State.

Hudgins (11-3) allowed one run, struck out six and walked two for Stanford (45-15), which has won eight in a row and 17 of its last 18.

Troy Tulowitzki's RBI double in the sixth gave Long Beach State (41-19) a short-lived 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Ryan Garko hit an RBI single, and Carlos Quentin scored on Donny Lucy's fielder's choice for a 2-1 lead.

Putnam homered with two men on in the eighth to seal the victory.
