Angels hammer Montreal in P.R.

Interleague roundup

The Associated Press

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Anaheim Angels took a quick liking to cozy Hiram Bithorn Stadium. Troy Glaus, Tim Salmon and Jeff DeVanon homered in the first inning to spoil the opener of Montreal's second homestand in San Juan with a 15-4 victory Tuesday night.

While the fans were still settling into their seats, the World Series champion Angels struck for five runs against Tomo Ohka (4-6) before the first out.

Those who showed up late still got to see the biggest moment: Bengie Molina's three-run homer for the Angels in front of his home fans.

Molina, who was born in a suburb of San Juan, had four of Anaheim's season-high 22 hits. The Angels scored their most runs since beating Seattle 15-3 last July 19.

DeVanon added another homer and Garret Anderson went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as Anaheim matched a franchise record for homers. Hitters enjoyed the small ballpark with the fast artificial turf. There have been 41 homers in the first 11 games at the stadium where it's 399 feet to dead center, 315 to left and 313 to right.

The Expos, owned by the other 29 teams, were forced to play 22 "home" games in San Juan this year because of poor attendance in Montreal. But only 10,034 fans bought tickets for the smallest crowd in the 11 games so far.

Marlins 13, Athletics 2

MIAMI - Mike Lowell hit a pair of three-run homers and the Florida Marlins sent Mark Mulder to his worst start in two years, beating Oakland. Brad Penny pitched seven strong innings and hit a three-run triple for the Marlins, who won for the eighth time in 11 games.

The six RBI set a career high for Lowell, who homered off Mulder as part of a six-run third inning, then connected again off John Halama in the fifth. Derrek Lee went 4-for-4 and scored twice, while Lowell added three hits.

Mulder (8-3) allowed eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, matching the number of runs he yielded in his previous 60 innings. His ERA, the American League's second-best at 2.36 before the game, rose to 3.08.

Braves 6, Rangers 5

ATLANTA - Andruw Jones came off the bench and hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning, lifting Atlanta past Texas. Texas closer Ugueth Urbina came on with one out and a runner at second. He retired Vinny Castilla on a grounder to shortstop, then got ahead 0-2 on Jones.

Mariners 4, Phillies 0

PHILADELPHIA - Jamie Moyer pitched seven shutout innings and Bret Boone homered, leading Seattle to its seventh straight victory. The win over Philadelphia came in the first meeting between the teams.

The AL West-leading Mariners improved the majors' best record to 38-18. The Phillies had won three straight.

Cardinals 11, Blue Jays 5

ST. LOUIS - Matt Morris won his third straight decision and Jim Edmonds' two-run homer sparked a four-run seventh inning as St. Louis beat Toronto.

Tigers 3, Padres 2

SAN DIEGO - Dmitri Young hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning to give Detroit the win over San Diego in a matchup of the worst teams in the majors. Earlier, Young's brother, Delmon, was the top pick in the amateur draft, going to Tampa Bay.

Diamondbacks 2, White Sox 1

PHOENIX - Chad Moeller singled home Shea Hillenbrand in the ninth inning. The Diamondbacks, who found out before the game they lost ace Curt Schilling to a broken right hand, rallied with runs in the eighth and ninth after seven shutout innings by Chicago's Esteban Loaiza.

Astros 11, Orioles 6

HOUSTON - Morgan Ensberg hit his first career grand slam in a six-run eighth, and Houston rallied past Baltimore.

Rockies 7, Indians 3

DENVER - Juan Uribe, playing for the first time this season after breaking his right foot in spring training, hit a pair of two-run homers to power Colorado past Cleveland.

Cubs 3, Devil Rays 2

CHICAGO - Chicago won in the ninth when Al Levine (2-2) threw a wild pitch that allowed Troy O'Leary, who had replaced Sammy Sosa, to score from third.
