ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals placed second baseman Fernando Vina on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a severely torn right hamstring, an injury that will sideline him for six-to-12 weeks.
It's a huge blow to the defending NL Central champions, because Vina is also the team's only true leadoff hitter. He has struggled much of the year, but a six-game hitting streak had boosted his average to .262 with a .316 on-base percentage.
Vina, who has drawn only four walks, had been well below .300 in on-base percentage most of the year. He was 10-for-25 in the last six games before crumpling to the ground running to first base in Sunday's 8-7 loss at Pittsburgh.
BLUE JAYS: Third baseman Eric Hinske will undergo surgery on his right hand and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks.
Last year's AL rookie of the year will undergo surgery on the broken hamate bone on Wednesday.
The hand has bothered him for much of the season. He hit .232 with two home runs and 21 RBI.
INDIANS: First baseman Travis Hafner was activated from the 15-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.
Hafner had been on the disabled list since May 10 with a broken left big toe.
Hafner hit .206 (20-for-97) with four home runs and 11 RBI in 30 games with the Indians this season.
GIANTS: Second baseman Ray Durham was activated from the disabled list Monday and infielder Cody Ransom was optioned to Triple-A Fresno.
