BOSTON - Pedro Martinez was placed on the disabled list for the fourth time in five seasons Sunday, but he's expected to pitch next weekend in Toronto.
Martinez, who has an inflamed tendon and strained muscle high on his right side, went on the 15-day list retroactive to May 16, the day after his last appearance for the Red Sox. He can be activated Saturday.
He felt pain in his side last Monday, and the next day he was scratched from his scheduled start against the New York Yankees at home.
Martinez also will miss Boston's three-game series at Yankee Stadium, which starts today. The Red Sox were expected to activate lefty Matt White to take Martinez's roster spot; White was in the clubhouse after the game.
"It's getting better," Martinez said Sunday. "I want to pitch as soon as possible, whenever I can.."
GIANTS: Barry Bonds tested his sore right knee by riding a stationary bike Sunday, but the Giants plan to keep him out of the lineup until they return to San Francisco.
Manager Felipe Alou said he would not consider using Bonds as a pinch-hitter today against Colorado because he's not well enough to run the bases.
The Giants open a two-game series against Arizona at Pacific Bell Park Tuesday.
PADRES: Outfielder Jason Bay broke his right wrist when Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Elmer Dessens hit him with a pitch in the second inning of Sunday's game.
