MLB power rankings

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Time for our monthly look at how the playoff matchups would look if the season ended today.

National League

Atlanta vs. Chicago: This would be an intriguing series. You've got the Cubs' young pitching vs. Atlanta's killer lineup. Vinny Castilla hitting eighth tells you all you need to know about the Braves offensively.

Montreal vs. San Francisco: The Expos hold a three-game lead in the wild-card chase. They are looking more and more for real. The Giants haven't been very good since their fast start, but they do have Barry Bonds.

American League

Seattle vs. Boston: Seattle is solid all around - first in fielding, second in pitching, fourth in hitting in the AL. The Red Sox are dangerous in any series because of Pedro Martinez.

New York Yankees vs. Minnesota: The Yankees have the Twins' number, but the Yankees have their share of problems. They'll miss Bernie Williams (knee), who could be out up to six weeks.
