Boston's Martinez to skip next start

Glavine set for 1st start vs. Braves

The Associated Press

BOSTON - Pedro Martinez probably will miss his second start in a week against the New York Yankees because of an inflamed tendon in his right side.

Martinez will miss his regular turn in Boston's rotation in Monday's opener of the three-game series in New York, Red Sox team physician Bill Morgan said Friday.

"I think Wednesday is relatively optimistic but not out of the question," Morgan said of a projected return date. "He's ahead of schedule."

Martinez is in minor pain, but going on the disabled list is a possibility.

"A lot's going to be dependent upon how his symptoms are when he starts throwing," Morgan said.

Martinez plans to throw lightly on flat ground before today's game against Cleveland for the first time since the injury occurred.

He was scratched from his scheduled start last Tuesday night in Boston against the Yankees after feeling pain the previous day while playing catch in the outfield.

METS: Tom Glavine isn't sure how he'll be received by the fans at Turner Field today when he faces the Braves for the first time as a member of the Mets. He's more worried about his own emotions.

"It's going to be strange," Glavine said Friday about facing his former team. "As a pitcher, you always look forward to pitching against good clubs. But I'm leaning toward just getting it over with."

Glavine spent 16 years with the Braves before signing with the Mets in the offseason.

• New York activated outfielder Jeromy Burnitz, who has been on the disabled list since breaking his hand April 22. He played center field Friday against Atlanta and batted sixth.

CARDINALS: St. Louis recalled reliever Gabe Molina from Triple-A Memphis and optioned outfielder Kerry Robinson to the same club.

Molina pitched briefly with the Cardinals last season, going 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 12 games. Robinson was hitting .179 with two homers and seven RBI in 27 games.

YANKEES: Shortstop Derek Jeter was a late scratch from Friday's game against Toronto because of mild stiffness in his left hamstring. The injury isn't considered serious.

PADRES: The team placed center fielder Mark Kotsay on the 15-day disabled list and activated catcher Gary Bennett, who had been out with a knee injury. The move for Kotsay, who has a sprained back, is retroactive to Monday.

The Padres also claimed outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. off waivers from Baltimore.
