NL: Millwood tallies 5th straight win

The Associated Press

MONTREAL - Kevin Millwood won his fifth straight decision, and Bobby Abreu and Placido Polanco homered to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Expos on Friday night.

Millwood (7-1) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings as Philadelphia ended Montreal's three-game winning streak. It was the ninth time Millwood has allowed two runs or fewer in 11 starts this season.

Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his 13th save of the year, becoming the 10th pitcher to record 100 career saves for two teams. Mesa also had 104 saves with Cleveland from 1992-98.

Abreu put Philadelphia up 3-1 in the third with a two-run homer - his seventh - off Zach Day (4-2) to score Pat Burrell, who hit a leadoff single.

Jose Vidro hit an RBI double off the center-field wall after Orlando Cabrera's two-out single in the fifth to draw Montreal to 3-2. Polanco restored the two-run lead with his third homer on reliever Dan Smith's second pitch of the sixth.

Philadelphia's David Bell went 3-for-3 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Day, who was 3-0 in his previous seven starts, lost for the first time since April 8 - his second start of the season. He allowed eight hits and three runs in five innings.

Cardinals 10, Pirates 8, 10 innings

PITTSBURGH - J.D. Drew tripled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as St. Louis, down to its last strike before Scott Rolen hit a three-run homer in the ninth, rallied.

Albert Pujols didn't homer for the first time in five games but had a career-high five hits - including an RBI single in the two-run 10th against Brian Meadows (0-1). The Cardinals trailed 6-1 and 7-2 before getting two three-run homers - Tino Martinez's in the eighth and Rolen's in the ninth.

Dodgers 6, Brewers 4

MILWAUKEE - Shawn Green hit a go-ahead three-run homer exactly one year after his four-home run game at Miller Park, and Los Angeles won its eighth consecutive game.

Green hit reliever John Foster's first pitch into the right-field bullpen, erasing Milwaukee's 4-3 lead with one out in the seventh. He went 3-for-5 with four RBI.

A year ago at the same ballpark, Green went 6-for-6 with seven RBI and set a major-league record with 19 total bases.

"I'm not greedy," Green said before batting practice. "I'll take one home run or a couple of hits and win the game. That was a once-in-a-lifetime day."

Astros 7, Cubs 4

HOUSTON - Jose Vizcaino hit a three-run homer off Mark Prior in a six-run first inning to lead Houston to its 11th win in its last 14 home games. The Astros moved within a half-game of the first-place Cubs in the NL Central.

Chicago has lost five of its last seven games.

Prior (5-2), trying to win his fourth straight decision, also allowed a two-run single by Orlando Merced in the first, and another run scored on an RBI grounder by Jeff Kent.

Mets 6, Braves 5

ATLANTA - Jeromy Burnitz hit a grand slam in his first game back from the disabled list, and defensive replacement Tsuyoshi Shinjo threw out Chipper Jones at the plate for the final out to preserve the victory for New York.

Burnitz had been out since breaking his hand April 22, when he was hit by a pitch from Houston closer Billy Wagner. Burnitz started in center field for the first time this season and highlighted a six-run sixth inning.
