AL: Angel makes grand entrance to bigs

By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Brian Roberts, called up to the majors this week, hit a grand slam in the ninth inning off Troy Percival that rallied the Baltimore Orioles over the Anaheim Angels 7-4 Thursday night.

Baltimore became the first team this season to score an earned run off Angels reliever Brendan Donnelly. After denting Donnelly, the Orioles then won it against Anaheim's closer.

Percival, who had been 7-for-7 on save chances this year, took over with a 4-3 lead to start the ninth. The Orioles loaded the bases with no outs when Gary Matthews Jr. walked, Deivi Cruz singled and Geronimo Gil was hit by a pitch.

Roberts followed by hitting a 3-2 pitch over the right-field fence for the first slam of his career.

Roberts was promoted from Triple-A on Wednesday when Jerry Hairston was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken foot. In the seventh, Roberts flied out with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Willis Roberts (3-1) got the victory. Jorge Julio, pitching for the fifth straight game, got his 12th save in 15 chances.

Percival (0-2) took the loss while pitching for the first time in five days. The Angels had been 20-0 when leading after eight innings, and their bullpen began the day with an AL-best 2.51 ERA.

Donnelly relieved Angels starter Ramon Ortiz with runners at second and third in the seventh and retired Gil on a popup and Roberts on a flyout.

But in the eighth, Donnelly gave up his first earned run this season after 24 1-3 innings.

Blue Jays 8, Yankees

NEW YORK - Carlos Delgado homered twice and drove in five runs Thursday night as the Toronto Blue Jays sent Andy Pettitte to his career-worst fourth straight loss.

New York, returning home after winning two of three at Fenway Park, lost its fourth straight game at Yankee Stadium and eighth in nine games, slicing its AL East lead over Boston to a half-game.

Roy Halladay (5-2) won his fifth straight start, Shannon Stewart homered and drove in three runs, Vernon Wells had three hits and Delgado provided all the power.

Delgado hit a three-run shot in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third against Pettitte (4-5) to give him an AL-leading 15 on the season.

Rangers 10, Devil Rays 8

ARLINGTON, Texas - Alex Rodriguez hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning, and the Texas Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to extend their winning streak to a season-high six.

Hank Blalock and Einar Diaz each homered and had three RBIs for Texas, which completed a three-game sweep. The Rangers are on their longest wining streak since taking eight in a row last June 19-25.

With the score 8-all, Rodriguez hit his 13th homer of the season, a drive off Travis Harper (0-3). The Rangers scored again later in the inning when Donnie Sadler came home on Mark Teixeira's double-play grounder.

Todd Van Poppel (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief, and Ugueth Urbina got three outs for his 15th save in 16 chances.

Twins 6, Athletics 5

OAKLAND, Calif. - Bobby Kielty hit a two-run homer and his bases-loaded walk forced in a run as Minnesota beat the Oakland Athletics and handed John Halama his first career loss to the Twins.

The Twins have won seven of their last nine games and 17 of 22. They took two of three from the defending AL West champions in a sometimes testy rematch of last season's first-round playoff series - won by Minnesota in the decisive fifth game. The benches cleared twice Tuesday.

Oakland had won 15 consecutive home series.

Joe Mays (5-3) won consecutive starts for the first time this season.

Luis Rivas had an RBI single in the ninth, and Eddie Guardado got three outs for his 12th save in as many chances, allowing a two-out homer to Mark Ellis.

Halama (2-3) dropped to 6-1 in nine appearances against the Twins.

Tigers 3, Indians 2, 11 innings

CLEVELAND - Eric Munson drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Detroit Tigers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over the Cleveland Indians.

The Tigers avoided a four-game sweep and snapped the Indians' three-game winning streak. Detroit improved to 1-3 in extra innings while Cleveland fell to 0-4.

The crowd was in a festive mood until the Tigers rallied. Indians fans let loose their biggest cheer during a sixth-inning pitching change - which had nothing to do with baseball.

The Indians used the video board in center field to show the replay of the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the NBA draft lottery and the crowd of 18,347 stood and cheered.

Franklyn German (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th and Steve Sparks worked the 11th for his second save. Jason Phillips (0-1) took the loss.

Mariners 5, Royals 1

SEATTLE - Gil Meche took another strong pitching performance into the seventh inning and Ben Davis homered to lead the Seattle Mariners over the Kansas City Royals.

Ichiro Suzuki doubled and scored twice as the AL West leaders won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Meche (6-2) won his second straight start, his fifth victory over the last six starts. As he's done previously, Meche worked with the efficiency of an assembly line, retiring 11 of his first 12 batters.

Kansas City has lost 17 of 26 following a 16-3 start. The Royals were limited to six hits.

Jeremy Affeldt (3-2) took the loss.
