NEW YORK - New York Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams has torn cartilage in his left knee and probably will need surgery that will sideline him four to six weeks.
An MRI revealed a sprain and tear of the medial meniscus.
Arthroscopic surgery has been recommended for Williams, who will take a day or two to decide but is leaning in that direction.
Roger Clemens, hit on the hand by a line drive Wednesday at Boston, expects to make his next start. He'll go for career win No. 300 Monday at New York.
INDIANS: C.C. Sabathia, who injured his left ankle Wednesday against Detroit, anticipates taking his regular turn in the rotation.
DIAMONDBACKS: Miguel Batista's 10-game suspension was upheld and will begin today. He hit St. Louis' Tino Martinez with a pitch April 20, sparking a brawl.
METS: Infielder Jay Bell (strained groin) was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
PIRATES: Outfielder Matt Stairs (torn finger ligament) was placed on the 15-day DL and Adam Hyzdu was recalled from Triple-A.
