PHOENIX- Jason Schmidt gave the beleaguered San Francisco bullpen the night off and sent the Giants out of Arizona with a masterpiece.
Schmidt threw a four-hitter in his second shutout of the season and Marquis Grissom homered twice as the Giants beat the sputtering Arizona Diamondbacks 6-0 on Wednesday night.
"That's the best stuff we've seen in a couple of years around here," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "He had no-hitter stuff tonight. He was still throwing 98 in the ninth inning. I thought we banged him around pretty good getting four hits."
Barry Bonds doubled in three runs in the fifth inning, but left in the bottom of the seventh with a mild sprain of his right ankle. He was hurt when he stepped on first base while running out a groundout in the top half of the inning.
Bonds said he was fine and, with an off-day today, would be back in the lineup Friday when the Giants open a four-game series in Colorado.
Schmidt (4-1) earned the fourth shutout and 10th complete game of his major league career. He struck out eight - all in the last five innings - and walked none.
"That's a rare thing these days to throw a complete game, but that is what you focus for," Schmidt said. "Most of the time you fall short, but tonight it worked out for the best."
"That was very impressive," Arizona's Mark Grace said. "That was electric. We're a good fastball hitting team, but that was a great fastball we were hitting tonight."
Miguel Batista (3-3) allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out none.
Cardinals 7, Astros 4
HOUSTON - Woody Williams won his ninth straight decision and St. Louis' Cal Eldred got Houston slugger Jeff Bagwell to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Albert Pujols homered and drove in four runs for the Cardinals.
Williams (6-0) hasn't lost a decision since last Aug. 29 at Cincinnati.
Williams left after giving Morgan Ensberg's leadoff home run in the eighth. Williams allowed two earned runs and struck out six.
The Astros loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Eldred. But he got his fourth save, getting Bagwell to end it.
Pete Munro (3-3) made his first start of the season as a replacement for Roy Oswalt, on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain.
Dodgers 3, Rockies 2
LOS ANGELES - Kazuhisa Ishii allowed two runs in six-plus innings and struck out a season-high eight as the Los Angeles Dodgers got another excellent pitching performance.
Eric Gagne closed out the Dodgers' season-high sixth win in a row with his 17th save in 17 opportunities. Alex Cora had two hits, including an RBI single, and scored a run for Los Angeles.
The loss was the fourth in five games and 14th in 20 for the Rockies.
Ishii (4-1) gave up only three hits but walked six to equal a career high.
Colorado starter Jason Jennings (3-4) took the loss.
Pirates 5, Cubs 2
PITTSBURGH - Kenny Lofton's aggressive baserunning led to Pittsburgh's first two runs and Jeff D'Amico made another strong start.
Jack Wilson and Brian Giles homered in a span of five pitches in the sixth as Kerry Wood (4-2) failed for the fourth straight start to win his 50th career game. Wood allowed a season-high five runs in 5 1-3 innings.
The Cubs lost their third straight since winning six of seven.
D'Amico (4-4) gave up seven hits and two runs in 7 1-3 innings.
Mike Williams pitched the ninth inning for his 13th save in 15 opportunities. The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, but pinch-hitter Tom Goodwin struck out and pinch-hitter Eric Karros grounded into a double play.
Mets 5, Phillies 4
NEW YORK - Tony Clark singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the New York Mets ended the Phillies' three-game winning streak.
Marco Scutaro opened the ninth with a single off Terry Adams (0-2) and moved to second on Roberto Alomar's groundout.
Clark then lined a single to right field and Scutaro scored without a throw.
Armando Benitez (1-3) pitched a hitless ninth for the victory.
Expos 7, Marlins 2
MONTREAL - Ron Calloway drove in two runs with one of Montreal's six doubles, rookie Claudio Vargas won his second straight decision and the Expos sent the Florida Marlins to their fifth loss in a row.
The Expos have won seven of nine overall.
Calloway's double off Carl Pavano (3-5) capped a three-run fourth inning as the Expos overcame an early 2-0 deficit.
Vargas (2-1), acquired from Florida along with Cliff Floyd last July 11 in the deal that sent Pavano to the Marlins, allowed six hits and two runs in 6 2-3 innings.
Alex Gonzalez hit his ninth homer for Florida, which fell to 3-6 under new manager Jack McKeon.
Brewers 10, Padres 0
MILWAUKEE - Geoff Jenkins homered in his first three at-bats off Jake Peavy (4-4) as Milwaukee extended a winning streak to three for the first time this season.
Wayne Franklin (3-4) pitched a two-hitter for his first complete game. Rondell White beat on an infield hit leading off the second, and pinch-hitter Ramon Vazquez singled to center leading off the ninth.
Jenkins hit a two-run homer in the first to put Milwaukee ahead, then hit solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings. He grounded back to reliever Luther Hackman in the seventh, and struck out against Mike Matthews in the eighth.
San Diego has lost eight straight and 16 of their last 18. Richie Sexson hit his 15th homer and had three RBIs.
