AL: Royals rock M's with 6 homers

The Associated Press

SEATTLE - Carlos Beltran's batting average has climbed over the past 12 games. It turns out he was saving his breakout performance, though.

Beltran hit two three-run homers and Kansas City tied a team record by hitting six home runs as the Royals broke a four-game losing streak with a 14-5 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

"Lately, I haven't been producing at the plate," said Beltran, who has lifted his average from .196 on May 6 to .265. "I'm not getting hits in RBI situations but today was a great game for me."

Michael Tucker had a two-run shot, and Joe Randa and Raul Ibanez added solo homers in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, after Seattle erased a 6-1 deficit to make it 6-5 in the fifth.

Seattle's Freddy Garcia (3-6) gave up the first three homers, losing his third straight start.

Angel Berroa added a three-run shot in the eighth for the Royals, connecting with two outs off reliever Giovanni Carrara.

Beltran, who moved from the No. 3 to No. 5 slot, added another three-run shot in the ninth off Julio Mateo, a towering first-pitch homer that traveled an estimated 432 feet and bounced off a second-deck cafe, high above right field.

"That was the longest home run I ever hit," Beltran said. "I knew it right away. It felt good."

The six homers tied a Kansas City team record, established July 14, 1991, at Detroit.

Kansas City lefty Chris George (5-3) pitched five innings and snapped Seattle's five-game winning streak. He moved up in the rotation when scheduled starter Miguel Asencio went on the 15-day disabled list with a swollen throwing elbow.

Orioles 7, Angels 6

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Tony Batista drove in three runs and Geronimo Gil singled home two more as the Baltimore Orioles ended a six-game road losing streak.

Baltimore ended a string of seven straight losses to the Angels, its longest skid in the series since the teams began playing in 1961.

Sidney Ponson (5-3) won for the fourth time in five starts, allowing four runs and nine hits in six innings after being staked to a 5-0 lead.

Anaheim's Troy Glaus hit his 10th homer of the season and third in two games.

Jorge Julio got the final two outs for his 11th save in 14 chances.

Aaron Sele (1-2) was charged with five runs - three earned - and six hits over six innings.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 2

BOSTON - Roger Clemens earned his 299th career victory, scattering nine hits in six innings against his former team on Wednesday night to lead the New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Raul Mondesi singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh to put the Yankees back into sole possession of first place in the AL East and move Clemens (6-2) one win from becoming the 21st pitcher in baseball history with 300 wins.

He is scheduled to try for the milestone victory at Yankee Stadium on Monday against the Red Sox, his team for the first 13 years of his career.

Jason Giambi hit a solo homer for the Yankees, while Nomar Garciaparra hit a solo shot for Boston.

Mariano Rivera got the last four outs for his fourth save.

Twins 4, Athletics 3

OAKLAND, Calif. - Dustan Mohr drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to spoil a strong start by Barry Zito and players kept their tempers in check as Minnesota beat Oakland.

The Twins scored the tying run in the eighth off Ricardo Rincon, who allowed a leadoff single to Cristian Guzman. LaTroy Hawkins (4-0) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the win and Eddie Guardado worked the ninth for his 11th save in as many chances.

The benches emptied twice in Oakland's 4-1 win Tuesday that began a three-game series, a testy rematch from last fall's playoffs.

Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer that tied the game in the fourth and also made two impressive defensive plays, robbing the A's of a hit on one and a run on the other.

Chad Bradford (2-3) took the loss.

Indians 4, Tigers 0

CLEVELAND - C.C. Sabathia pitched six innings before leaving with a sprained left ankle, and the Cleveland Indians sent the Detroit Tigers to their ninth shutout loss.

Shane Spencer drove in two runs for Cleveland, which has won three in a row for the first time this year and has five victories in its last six games.

Detroit lost its seventh straight. The Tigers are a major league-worst 9-35.

Sabathia (3-2) was working on a three-hitter when he collided with Detroit's Dmitri Young at first base on the final out of the top of the sixth.

Cleveland took a 3-0 lead in the third against Jeremy Bonderman (2-7).

White Sox 6, Blue Jays 5

CHICAGO - Carlos Lee hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays.

Lee connected off Cliff Politte (1-3) for his eighth homer, one pitch after he nearly struck out on a check swing.

Damaso Marte (2-0) pitched one-third of an inning for the win and Billy Koch got the final three outs for his fifth save in seven chances.

The Blue Jays went up 2-0 in the third on Vernon Wells' RBI double and an RBI single by Tom Wilson.

Paul Konerko and Tony Graffanino both hit solo homers for Chicago.

Rangers 8, Devil Rays 7

ARLINGTON, Texas - Rookie Mark Teixeira homered, tripled and drove in a career-high four runs as the Texas Rangers extended their season-best winning streak to five games.

Ruben Sierra's run-scoring single in the seventh inning off Jesus Colome (1-2) put the Rangers up 8-7.

Teixeira followed Michael Young's single with his third homer off rookie reliever Brandon Backe to give the Rangers a 7-5 lead in the fourth inning.

Teixeira's two-run triple highlighted a five-run third for the Rangers.

Francisco Cordero (2-4) picked up the win, and Ugueth Urbina pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save in 15 opportunities.
