Going, going ...
Even before Adam Dunn and Aaron Boone homered Saturday, the Reds were leading the National League with 65 homers and were on pace to hit a club-record 250.
The 1956 Reds - led by Frank Robinson (38), Wally Post (36) and Ted Kluszewski (35) - hold the record with 221.
Individually, Dunn (16), Austin Kearns (14) and Boone (11) are among the league leaders.
Dunn is now on pace to hit 60 homers and Kearns (pictured above) is on pace to hit 49. That would shatter the Reds' record for teammates in a season. A look at the top duos:
87 - Kluszewski (47), Post (40), 1955
85 - Johnny Bench (45), Tony Perez (40), 1970
83 - George Foster (52), Bench (31), 1977
76 - Kluszewski (49), Jim Greengrass (27), 1954
75 - Lee May (38), Perez (37), 1969
70 - Greg Vaughn (45), Sean Casey (25), 1999.
Finish the job
Danny Graves' complete game Wednesday was the Reds' first of the season and got them halfway to last season's total of two. In fact, the Reds had only two complete games in 2001, as well.
How has baseball changed? In Reds history, 58 pitchers have completed at least 20 games in a
season, the last in 1949.
Noodles Hahn, himself, completed 41 in 1901.
One that got away?
The Athletics claimed Reds right-hander Mike Neu in the Rule 5 draft.
The A's had to keep Neu on their major-league roster or offer him back to the Reds. Neu was 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA in 21 games with Double-A Chattanooga and 2-3 with a 4.01 ERA and 16 saves at Triple-A Louisville last season.
Neu is 0-0 with a 0.83 ERA for Oakland in nine games.
By the numbers
8-19-02: The last time the Reds were three games over .500 (63-60).
15: Wins in the Reds' past 22 games.
12: Consecutive games in which the Reds have hit a home run.
12: Hitting streak of
Austin Kearns.
17: Converted saves in 20 chances by Scott Williamson since replacing Danny Graves as closer last
season.
31: Home runs needed by Ken Griffey Jr. to become the third player to join the 500-home run club this
season, joining Sammy
Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro.
