Kreuter gets the boot from Rangers

Baseball notebook

The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas - Catcher Chad Kreuter is being dropped by the Texas Rangers, who were hoping he would make Chan Ho Park a better pitcher. Kreuter was told of the move, which will take effect today, after Sunday's game.

Kreuter usually caught Park when they were with the Los Angeles Dodgers. After Park struggled last season, the Rangers brought Kreuter to spring training. He made the club and went 2-for-18 in seven games, including six starts. And Park is 1-3 with a 7.16 ERA.

DON'T PLAY WITH FIRE: A man was convicted Monday of charges he threw an explosive device akin to a firecracker at a Cleveland Indians game last summer. Andrew Mendez was found guilty of aggravated arson, assault and three counts of negligent assault. He faces three to 10 years in prison.

JETER CONTINUES REHAB: Derek Jeter hit off a tee for the first time Monday, taking another step in his rehabilitation from a dislocated left shoulder in the season opener. Jeter said he might start batting practice this weekend.

BURNETT TO HAVE SURGERY: Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett will undergo elbow surgery today to repair a torn ligament and could be sidelined for the rest of the season or longer.
