Notes from Sunday's games

By The Associated Press

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Diamondbacks-Mets

ARIZONA: RHP Brandon Webb struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings of his first major league start, then was optioned back to Triple-A Tucson. The Diamondbacks needed to make room for LHP Randy Johnson, who was activated from the 15-day DL to start the second game of the doubleheader. "Of course I'm disappointed," Webb said. "But it's a numbers issue now because we have to get Randy off the DL and someone has to go down." ... Johnson had his 19-inning scoreless streak against the Mets snapped when Tsuyoshi Shinjo hit an RBI single in the second. ... Of the 30 pitchers to start a game in Arizona's six-year history, Webb became the 23rd to win his first start. ... 3B Matt Williams snapped a 21 at-bat hitless streak with an infield single in the fifth inning and a solo homer in the seventh of the opener. He added a pair of sacrifice flies in the second game. ... Webb's 10 strikeouts were his second-most as a professional. He struck out 14 on Aug. 2, 2001, with Class-A Lancaster against Modesto in the California League. "I usually look to get those two- or three-pitch groundouts," Webb said. "Today I got some four-pitch strikeouts." ... The Diamondbacks have swept two doubleheaders in their history - both against the Mets. They also did it Aug. 3, 2002.

NEW YORK: Joe McEwing, who has a reputation for success against Randy Johnson, went 0-for-3 against the Big Unit and is hitless in his last 10 at-bats against Johnson. McEwing is 6-for-27 in his career against Johnson with four doubles and one homer. ... Before the first game, closer Armando Benitez was honored for being the team's top pitcher last season. Manager Art Howe accepted the award for Benitez, who has been booed for blowing four saves this season. ... After the doubleheader, SS Rey Sanchez received an injection for tendinitis in his right elbow. Sanchez has not started for four straight games. He pinch-hit in the second game and struck out against Johnson. ... The first 12,000 children were supposed to receive orange batting practice jerseys, but the shipment was delayed so they got a coupon for the jersey instead. ... Jae Seo walked David Dellucci in the first inning of Game 2. Seo entered with no walks in 22 1-3 innings.

Astros-Expos

HOUSTON: The Astros won for just the fourth time in their last 15 games and finished 4-9 on their longest road trip in 10 years. Houston hadn't played this many consecutive road games since July 27 to Aug. 23, 1992, when the Astros played 26 straight road games over 28 days while the Astrodome hosted the Republican National Convention. ... The first six batters reached to begin the game against Montreal's Tomo Ohka, though the Astros came close to running themselves out of the inning without scoring as runners got caught in rundowns on successive plays. "When you get a double and two singles and you don't have a run and there's two outs, it's pretty unusual," Astros manager Jimy Williams said. "I don't think I've ever seen that - not like that." Ohka nearly escaped unscathed, but hit Lance Berkman with a 1-2 pitch before Jeff Kent hit his fourth homer for a 3-0 lead. ... Jeff Bagwell, who got his 2,000th hit Saturday, hit his major league-leading 10th homer in the third. ... RHP Octavio Dotel pitched the ninth for his first save of the season. Dotel had six saves last season.

MONTREAL: The game drew 13,310 for a Frank Robinson bobblehead promotion. The Expos randomly distributed 5,000 dolls in the first of six bobblehead giveaways this season. ... RHP Tomo Ohka, who allowed five runs in his previous five starts, gave up five runs and seven hits in three innings as his ERA increased from 1.78 to 3.33. ... Montreal went 4-2 on its first homestand at Olympic Stadium after going 6-4 during 10 "home" games in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Expos averaged 12,980 during the six games in Montreal, down from 14,282 for the San Juan games. ... C Michael Barrett hit his second homer, going 1-for-4 to raise his average from .093 to .103 (6-for-58). Barrett broke out of an 0-for-25 slump with a single Friday. He went 2-for-16 on the homestand.

Dodgers-Pirates

LOS ANGELES: CF Dave Roberts played only one inning of the Pirates series because of a strained right hamstring, but is eager to get back in the lineup. He said, "I don't want to be Wally Pipp" - a reference to the former Yankees 1B who gave up his lineup spot to Lou Gehrig while sick one day and never got it back. ... Vin Scully, in his 54th season as a Dodgers broadcaster, has asked the Pirates to send him one of the Bob Prince talking bobblehead dolls they'll give away next month. He's not a collector, but wanted one of Prince, his late friend and a Pirates announcer for nearly 30 years. Prince died in 1985. Both Scully and Prince are in the broadcasters wing of the Hall of Fame. ... 3B Adrian Beltre (elbow) and C Paul Lo Duca (forearm) had precautionary X-rays after the Dodgers' 6-2 victory Sunday in Pittsburgh. Both were negative. Beltre's left elbow was badly swollen after being hit by a pitch from Julian Tavarez on Saturday night, but talked his way into the lineup Sunday and had a run-scoring double. Lo Duca was hit on the forearm by Jeff Suppan's pitch in the third inning Sunday.

PITTSBURGH: GM Dave Littlefield said he's not discouraged by the Pirates' attendance decline to 17,828 per game. The Pirates had 15 April home games, the most of any major league team except the Phillies and the Expos, which have 16 each. Montreal, though, played only six in Montreal; 10 were in Puerto Rico. ... The Pirates are 4-11 at home. ... The five-game losing streak is a season high. They are 6-14 since starting 4-0. ... Rob Mackowiak has one hit in 24 at-bats. ... Reggie Sanders has two RBIs in 17 games since April 4. ... SS Jack Wilson was 4-for-4 Sunday and is 9-for-15 since moving into the No. 2 spot in the batting order. He said, "I think getting moved up to No. 2 for a few games has helped me get a few better pitches to hit and that's helped my confidence."

---

Padres-Reds

SAN DIEGO: Manager Bruce Bochy said CF Mark Kotsay's back was a little tight after he made a diving catch in right-center field on Sean Casey's line drive to force Saturday's game into extra innings. Kotsay had missed the previous three games with a sore back before entering Saturday's game in the eighth inning. Bochy was hoping that two days of rest would have Kotsay ready for Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh at San Diego ... Adam Eaton, Tuesday's Padres starter, hasn't allowed a run in 13 consecutive innings over his last two starts.

CINCINNATI: Barry Larkin is hoping to have more than just his 39th birthday to celebrate Monday. The veteran shortstop is hoping that he passed Sunday's final test he needs to be activated from the disabled list. Larkin has been sidelined since April 14 with a strained left calf. He was eligible to be activated Saturday, but his return will depend on how he feels Monday after running the bases Sunday ... Opening day starter Jimmy Haynes felt soreness in his back Sunday after long tossing Saturday. Haynes, who went on the DL April 17 with a bulging disc, doubts that he'll be ready when he's eligible to be activated Saturday.

---

Brewers-Braves

MILWAUKEE: 1B Richie Sexson went hitless in his final nine at-bats of the three-game series after hitting three home runs and a double in the opener. His batting average fell to .300. ... With both pitchers struggling with their control, the game dragged through the middle innings. "The game was three hours long in the fourth inning, it seemed," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. ... LHP Glendon Rusch, pounded for four runs on eight hits in 4 1-3 innings, failed to get a win for the fourth straight start. "I'm not crisp," he said. "I'm not throwing pitches where I want to. I'm having long innings." His five walks were one shy of his career high. ... CF Alex Sanchez doubled on the first pitch of the game and eventually scored on a groundout. That was it for the Brewers.

ATLANTA: After the game, the Braves watched former teammate Kevin Millwood complete a no-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies. "I was probably more nervous than he was," RHP Greg Maddux said. ... C Javy Lopez (left hamstring) hit a home run in his second game back in the starting lineup. He missed five starts. Backup C Johnny Estrada, called up when 1B Robert Fick (sprained right shoulder) went on the DL, probably will be sent back to Triple-A Richmond when Fick is activated, which could be Monday. ... 2B Marcus Giles is now 12-for-20 (.600) against left-handers this season.

---

Giants-Phillies

SAN FRANCISCO: LHP Kirk Rueter, who will start against Chicago on Tuesday, is 128-76 in his 204 starts with the Giants since 1996 and 29-9 in his last 38 outings. San Francisco has won four of his five starts this season. ... The Giants return home on Tuesday and will face the Chicago Cubs and former manager Dusty Baker for the first time. Baker managed San Francisco from 1993-2002. ... The Giants' 18-6 start is their best since 1973. ... After Kevin Millwood's no-hitter against them on Sunday, the Giants are the only team to be no-hit in a nine-inning game at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium. Terry Mulholland also had a no-hitter against San Francisco on Aug. 15, 1990.

PHILADELPHIA: Monday's starter, RHP Brett Myers, has pitched better than his 1-2 record this season. Myers' ERA is 2.88 and he has pitched six or more innings in all four of his starts with 27 strikeouts. In his two losses, Myers has allowed a combined four runs and 11 hits in 13 innings of work. ... The Phillies are embarking on a 10-game, three-city road trip on Monday, the first time they have gone to more than one city on a trip this season. ... Marlon Byrd, who has been on the disabled list since lacerating his left knee on April 14, rejoined the team on Sunday and will travel to Los Angeles. He is expected to be taken off the disabled list on Tuesday. ... LHP Hector Mercado pitched two innings and gave up a walk in a rehab start with Double-A Reading against Harrisburg on Sunday. Mercado has a strained right hamstring. ... The Phillies finished the homestand 5-1, sweeping Colorado and winning two of three over the Giants.

Cardinals-Marlins

ST. LOUIS: Manager Tony La Russa returned to the dugout after serving his one-game suspension on Saturday for his role in last week's brawl against the Diamondbacks. . . The Cards continue to use sore-armed LF Albert Pujols on a limited basis, taking him out after five or six innings. The outfield is not very deep at Pro Player Stadium, meaning Pujols has less ground to cover and has shorter throws to make. ... Reliever Jason Isringhausen, on the DL following shoulder surgery, reported "no pain" after some tossing over the weekend. Isringhausen wants to return quickly. "We're only in the first month of the season, so we're not in that big of a hurry," he said.

MARLINS: The Marlins are trying to put the best face possible on news of more arm trouble for ace A.J. Burnett. Burnett will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday and will be examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., following soreness and swelling in his right arm. LHP Michael Tejera will move into the rotation and start Wednesday at Arizona. "We still have a very good ballclub here," said GM Larry Beinfest. "I fully expect this team to persevere whether it's losing a starter or having a hiccup in the bullpen."

---

Cubs-Rockies

CHICAGO: Manager Dusty Baker said pain might have been part of the reason Shawn Estes struggled against the Rockies on Saturday. The left-hander allowed six runs in the second inning and didn't make it out of the third, but Baker said a back injury might have played a role in his struggles. "Something is wrong. He didn't throw many curveballs. He couldn't get the ball down. He was throwing the ball with pretty good velocity, but he wasn't following through right. We saw on the video that on a couple of pitches he kind of winced afterward, so something's wrong." ... Baker said he hasn't spent much time thinking about his return to San Francisco on Tuesday, but he knows it will be hard to treat it as just another game. "It's harder," said Baker, who managed the Giants for 10 yeas before moving to Chicago this season. "No. 1, people aren't going to let you, so it's not going to be average. No. 2, that's my home and it was my home the last 15 years. You just don't go back home and don't feel nothing." ... Baker said he plans to spend the Cubs' off day on Monday fishing.

COLORADO: Manager Clint Hurdle said he was pleased to see closer Jose Jimenez have an easy inning against the Cubs on Saturday. Jimenez allowed a walk and no hits in the ninth of Colorado's 8-5 win after struggling his last few outings. "It is just one of those situations like anything else in the game. You've got to find opportunities for these guys to have success and you've got to keep them out there for the best of their abilities," Hurdle said. "Nothing is going to bring more confidence than a little success." ... RHP Denny Stark threw from 60 feet on Sunday, but his return is still up in the air. He's been out since the end of spring training with a torn right lat muscle and had a setback during a bullpen session on April 12.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Royals-Blue Jays

KANSAS CITY: 1B Ken Harvey didn't let Toronto's SARS outbreak bother him. Harvey said the only precaution he took while in Toronto was washing his hands frequently. "I went out to the mall yesterday," Harvey said. "I wasn't going to sit in my hotel room and sulk." C Brent Mayne said he enjoyed his weekend in Toronto. "It was fine. I enjoyed the city and it was a good time," Mayne said. ... Kansas City has had its best April in franchise history, surpassing the 1989 mark of 16 wins. The Royals are 17-5. ... The Royals played music in their clubhouse after the game despite blowing a seven-run lead in Sunday's 10-9 loss. ... The Royals have homered in eight straight games. ... Starter Runelvys Hernandez turned 25 on Sunday.

TORONTO: Toronto's bullpen allowed just one run in 5 2-3 innings. "It's no secret our bullpen hasn't been as effective as we'd like," Carlos Delgado said. "It's nice to put the shoe on the other foot." ... The Blue Jays have made errors in 19 of 26 games and lead the American League with 28. ... Players from both teams signed autographs with fans' pens despite the SARS scare.

---

Orioles-Devil Rays

BALTIMORE: RHP Sidney Ponson has gone at least 6 2-3 innings in four consecutive starts after lasting 2 1-3 innings in his first start of the season. "Sidney is staying together mentally," manager Mike Hargrove said. "He's keeping his focus and not letting a close call take him out of his zone. He's done a much better job staying consistent with his focus and you're seeing the results." ... LHP Buddy Groom worked a perfect inning, including two strikeouts. He has not allowed a run in 10 outings and nine innings. ... LHP B.J. Ryan has given up one run over 10 1-3 innings in his 13 games. He retired pinch-hitter Terry Shumpert on a grounder with two on and two out in the seventh. ... Closer Jorge Julio had retired 15 straight before allowing consecutive singles in the ninth to Tampa Bay's George Lombard and Chris Truby. He finished Sunday's 7-4 win in a non-save situation.

TAMPA BAY: Manager Lou Piniella said reports on LHP John Rocker's extended spring training outing Saturday were good. Rocker is expected to join Double-A Orlando this week. The Devil Rays have not ruled out calling him up next month. "Hopefully, he'll get tired of the bus trips quick," Piniella said. ... RHP Victor Zambrano, who pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win Saturday, will remain in the bullpen for now. "I think he'll prosper in the bullpen," Piniella said. Zambrano had been in the rotation, but was shifted to the bullpen for the weekend series against Baltimore. ... INF Damion Easley (bruised right knee cap and quadriceps muscle) should return to the starting lineup Tuesday. ... RHP Dewon Brazelton could be called up from Triple-A Durham to start Saturday's game at Detroit.

---

Yankees-Rangers

NEW YORK: Even with a 10-7 loss at Texas on Sunday, the Yankees completed their 10-game trip 8-2. It is the first time they've won at least eight games on a trip since going 9-1 against Seattle, Oakland and Anaheim from July 14-24, 1994. New York missed out on just its second three-game sweep in 10 years at Texas. ... RHP Jeff Weaver hasn't had much success against Texas. His only win against the Rangers was last May 17 when he had a complete-game 6-3 victory while pitching for Detroit. But he is 1-5 with a 5.24 ERA in eight career games (seven starts) against Texas. He gave up nine runs - seven earned - on 11 hits Sunday before leaving after the first five batters reached in the fifth inning. ... New York's starting pitchers are 1-2 in four starts since opening the season 16-0. The 16 straight wins to start the season were the most by a starting staff in the majors since 1900.

TEXAS: 1B Rafael Palmeiro's RBI single Sunday was his 1,591st career RBI, tying him for 24th on the career list with Andre Dawson. ... Even without a home run Sunday, the Rangers are second in the majors with 42, six behind the Yankees. It is the most homers Texas has had through 25 games, one more than in 2001. ... The Rangers are 11-14, having avoided falling five games under .500 for the first time this season with their 10-7 win over New York Yankees on Sunday that also avoided a three-game sweep. After starting 8-11 in their 19-game stretch against AL West foes, the Rangers split six games with Boston and New York, the top two teams in the AL East.

Twins-White Sox

MINNESOTA: Manager Ron Gardenhire said when the benches cleared Saturday night, it was not that big of a deal, just a rivalry heating up. 'This is good baseball. Go watch boring baseball if you want to," Gardenhire said. "Both teams are getting after it. So there are a few guys yelling at each other. I get tired of seeing guys pat each other in the back and giving love hugs all day long." ... Doug Mientkiewicz got the day off Sunday after being hit twice by pitches in the first two games. He was booed in those games because of earlier comments that the White Sox should lose their role as All-Star game host after a fan ran on the field and attacked an umpire earlier this week. ... Rick Reed was very effective Sunday, retiring 17 of the final 19, including the final 10. But his seven innings of three-hit ball weren't good enough for a victory. He's now 1-5 against the White Sox in his career. ... Torii Hunter's average dropped to .212 after a 1-for-4 performance. 'It's getting late and I'm tired of this," he said.

CHICAGO: Jerry Manuel said he wasn't trying to inspire his team by getting ejected in the first inning Sunday. But his players still took notice. "Everybody was fired up," Chicago's Jose Valentin said. "We were smiling in the dugout. We were surprised that it happened that early." It was Manuel's eighth career ejection. Does his team need him to show that kind of emotion? "Every now and then they probably need a little something during the course of the year," he said ... The 2-hour game was the quickest for the White Sox since a June 1997 game against the Cubs that also took 2 hours. ... When Esteban Loaiza gave up two first-inning singles Sunday, they were the first first-inning hits he'd yielded all season. ... Magglio Ordonez has reached base in 23 straight games. ... Carlos Lee is batting .345 (20-for-58) with 18 RBIs over his last 15 games.

---

Indians-Athletics

CLEVELAND: LHP Brian Anderson, involved in recovering a stolen purse with LHP Carl Sadler on Saturday night in San Francisco, inadvertently tested his sore right hamstring chasing down the suspect. "After it was over Carl said, 'Brian, your hamstring,"' Anderson recalled. "I said, 'You're right! It didn't pop."' Anderson made it through his bullpen session on Sunday without any problems. "I don't know when I'm going to start but if it was up to me I'd get out there as soon as possible." Anderson originally strained his hamstring while playing catch in the outfield before a game last week and missed his scheduled start on Thursday. While RHP Jason Davis is slated to go on Wednesday, that could change if Anderson is healthy. "I went at it like it was a game," said Anderson. "It was a little sore but not weak. If I get a vote, I'd go Wednesday." If he doesn't go Wednesday, he'll probably start next Sunday against the Texas Rangers. ... RHP Jason Bere pitched a simulated game on Sunday to test his strained right shoulder. He's expected to begin a rehab assignment this week.

OAKLAND: 3B Eric Chavez and OF Chris Singleton were given the day off on Sunday as the Athletics finished their homestand. "We have other guys on this team, it's April, and we need to get them some at bats," said A's manager Ken Macha. 3B Frank Menechino and OF Ron Gant replaced Chavez and Singleton. ... Macha also announced the rotation for the series against Chicago that opens Tuesday at Comiskey Park: LHP Barry Zito, LHP Mike Mulder and LHP John Halama. Halama was moved up in the rotation so former Yankees' LHP Ted Lilly could make a start in New York on Friday. ... RHP Keith Foulke will be making his first appearance in Chicago since the A's acquired him in a trade which also involved RHP Billy Koch going to the White Sox. "It's always an interesting situation when you see someone come back to play their former team," said Macha. "Everybody reacts differently." ... OF Eric Byrnes slammed into the wall just beyond the bullpen catching a foul ball in the sixth inning of Saturday's game. "That's not instinct," said Singleton, "that's Byrnes-stinct."

---

Red Sox-Angels

BOSTON: RHP John Burkett was busy working out in the weight room and missed the end of former Atlanta teammate Kevin Millwood's no-hitter against San Francisco. Millwood made 56 starts without a complete game during their two seasons together with the Braves (2000-01). "Those were probably the two worst years of his career, so I didn't see him at his best, unfortunately," Burkett said. "Before I put the curse on him, he was real good. He's got great stuff, and he's a horse. He doesn't get too upset or worked up over anything, so it's not a big surprise that he threw a no-hitter because he probably didn't even realize he had one until it was over." ... Nomar Garciaparra's 19 consecutive hitless at-bats coming in represented the longest drought of his career. His previous longest dry spell was 18 at-bats in May 1997, during his rookie season. The two-time batting champion was trying to avoid going hitless in five straight games for the first time in the majors. "It's unbelievable, but we're all human out here and those things are going to happen," teammate Shea Hillenbrand said. "It's how players handle those situations and how their character prevails to allow them to have success after that. And Nomar has great character. We're not even worried about Nomar. He's going to be able to pick us up and carry us through the rest of the season because he's an unbelievable player." ... Pitching coach Tony Cloninger, who rejoined the team last Tuesday after being diagnosed with cancer during spring training, is scheduled to receive the first of six treatments this week. ... LHP Alan Embree, sidelined since April 9 with tendinitis in his shoulder, is expected to be activated Tuesday after making his final rehab appearance Saturday night. ... Burkett's eight-inning complete game loss Saturday made him the oldest Red Sox pitcher to go the distance since Tom Seaver did at age 41 on Aug. 8, 1986, at Detroit. Burkett is 38.

ANAHEIM: Before RF Tim Salmon and LF Garret Anderson arrived in Anaheim, the only outfielder to get 1,000 or more hits in an Angels uniform was Brian Downing. Boston general manager Mike Port, who held the same job with the Angels when Salmon and Anderson were drafted, is proud of what they've accomplished - and that they emerged as cornerstones of a championship team. "Both of them were signed because of their playing capability and both had demonstrated that they were both very, very high-quality people and had a good focus on the game," Port said. ... 3B Troy Glaus missed his second game because of an infection between the fourth and fifth toes on his left foot. But the World Series MVP is expected back in the lineup for the series at Cleveland, which begins Tuesday night. ... RHP Aaron Sele, who underwent rotator cuff surgery last October, is slated to make his season debut next Saturday at Toronto. ... RHP Brendan Donnelly came in with a 14-inning scoreless streak - the longest by an Angels pitcher to start a season since 1996, when Troy Percival went 14 2-3 innings without allowing a run.

Rookie SS Omar Infante was 12-for-43 (.279) on the road trip. ... Bobby Higginson was 2-for-4 for his seventh multihit game of the season. ... Manager Alan Trammell said his young team must have learned something from its 3-20 start. "In my opinion, they should be thinking, 'We could have done something and we could have won this ballgame,"' Trammell said after a 4-3 loss to Seattle.

SEATTLE: The Mariners are 6-1 in one-run games. ... The crowd of 39,678 was the largest of the homestand. ... RHP Freddy Garcia has allowed seven homers in six starts this season. ... Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Winn each stole their fifth base in five attempts. ... The Mariners are 8-0 in day games. ... The Mariners didn't get a hit after Bret Boone's RBI single in the third inning gave his team a 4-2 lead.
