The Dodgers agree that Chris Reitsma belongs in the big leagues. But then, every pitcher looks like Cy Young against the Dodgers lately.
"Reitsma threw a great game," said outfielder Brian Jordan, who had one of the Dodgers' eight singles off him Wednesday night. "Give him a lot of credit. He had a good changeup. When he needed a double play, he got it.
"Today he proved he belongs in the major leagues."
Reitsma, just recalled from the minors, pitched eight scoreless innings and had a bases-loaded single in the Reds' 3-0 victory over the weak-hitting Dodgers.
The Dodgers are second-to-last in the NL in homers and have scored four or fewer runs in 10 of their last 11 games. They've been shut out twice this season.
"It's a fairly similar script to what's been holding us up," manager Jim Tracy said. "It's that simple. We pitched well enough to win. We got three scoreless innings from our bullpen. We were unable to come up with a run. I don't know what else there is to be said."
Darren Dreifort (1-2) gave up seven hits and three runs in five innings, including Juan Castro's solo homer in the third and Reitsma's two-run single an inning later.
Reitsma, a .103 career hitter, had three RBIs when he came to bat in the fourth with the bases loaded and one out. He worked Dreifort to a 1-1 count, then singled up the middle for a 3-0 lead.
"I was trying to go away, and it came back over the plate," Dreifort said. "It was still a good pitch. I wanted to get a strikeout or a groundball. A foot and a half the other way and it's a double play and we're out of there. It just didn't work out that way."
The Dodgers' Dave Roberts beat out a grounder to shortstop Felipe Lopez to start the game, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games. Roberts also made his second error in two games, a curiosity for the center fielder.
Roberts didn't commit an error in his first 221 games in the majors with Cleveland and Los Angeles. He dropped a fly ball during a 2-1 victory over the Reds on Tuesday, his first error in 406 chances. He had another one during the Reds' two-run rally in the fourth.
Notes: Dodgers RHP Guillermo Mota pitched two hitless innings. It was his first appearance since he was arrested early Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in California.
