ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas center fielder Doug Glanville has a ruptured tendon in his right hamstring and is considering surgery that would keep him out another month.
Without the surgery, Glanville might be able to return in half of that time, but with no assurances he won't have more problems with the injury.
"That's the tough part," Glanville said Tuesday. "You can sit back and try to rehab and maybe you're back in two weeks. But maybe not and you're still facing the same decision. Or you take care of it and have a little more certainty."
Glanville hopes to make his decision by Wednesday.
Rangers manager Buck Showalter said Glanville can have a 10-minute surgical procedure that would eliminate the problem. If not, he could continue rehabilitation and be back in about two weeks.
"It's Doug's leg. I'm not sure what he will do," Showalter said. "The bottom line is Doug has to decide what he wants to do."
Glanville went on the 15-day disabled list on April 17, retroactive to April 15, the day after he got hurt running out a grounder against Anaheim.
The ruptured tendon was diagnosed after an MRI that was reviewed Monday by Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala.
Glanville spent Tuesday talking to doctors and others who have been through similar injuries. Among those he talked to was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter, who missed nearly two months during the 2001 season with a torn left hamstring.
"It feels good right now, and that's the tough part," Glanville said. "I feel like I'm moving forward. But talking to people that have gone through the experience, you hit a point where you feel better, and hit a plateau. You want to make sure you're making progress."
Glanville signed a $1 million, one-year contract with the Rangers in the offseason after five seasons with Philadelphia. He also spent two seasons with the Chicago Cubs and had never been on the disabled list.
In his first 13 games for Texas, all as the leadoff hitter and in center field, Glanville hit .200 with two homers and two RBIs.
METS: David Cone left Tuesday's start against Houston with a sore left hip and is day-to-day.
ANGELS: Pitcher Kevin Appier was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained flexor muscle in his right forearm.
ORIOLES: Baltimore played its third straight game without manager Mike Hargrove, who could return today if his mother continues to improve. Rita Ann Hargrove had her infected gallbladder removed Sunday.
GIANTS: Barry Bonds was out of the lineup Tuesday against Pittsburgh because of a stiff neck. He hopes to return today.
Jason Schmidt will miss Thursday's start following the death of his mother, who had a brain tumor.
DODGERS: Reliever Guillermo Mota was arrested in Glendale, Calif., on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Mota declined to discuss the arrest Tuesday.
