Currently, Amaro Sr. serves as the manager of the Gulf Coast Phillies of the Single-A Gulf Coast League while Amaro Jr. is the major league club's assistant general manager.

---

Astros-Mets

HOUSTON: All-Star OF Lance Berkman did not start for the fifth straight game because of a sprained ligament in his left elbow. We're going to be careful." ... 1B Jeff Bagwell, slowed by an injured left shoulder last season, is leading the Astros offense. He came into the game hitting .333 with eight homers, and 13 RBIs. The Mets hope Franco will be ready for a minor league rehab assignment some time in May. ... OF Cliff Floyd did not start for the second straight game because of a nagging injury to his Achilles. Floyd was available to pinch hit and manager Art Howe expects him back in the lineup Wednesday. "It's frustrating because I put so much work in during the offseason to be in position to help this team," Floyd said. "I'm going to try to deal with it and if I need surgery in the offseason I'll have it." ... The Mets haven't decided whether to go with 11 or 12 pitchers when they activate RHP Pedro Astacio from the DL this week. "We have to balance the health of our outfield with the needs of our pitchers," GM Steve Phillips said. They also haven't officially decided on whether Astacio will come off the DL in time to pitch Thursday. ... Knight has a history of kidney stone problems, and missed three games as the Reds' manager because of them in 1996. ... Aaron Boone moved back to third base for the first time this season. RHP Russ Ortiz, the starter Monday night, didn't pitch against the Cardinals last season when he was with the Giants, and he hadn't faced them since June 30, 2001. He didn't receive a decision in that game. ... C Javy Lopez (hamstring) was out of the lineup for the second straight game. He's day-to-day, but won't play Wednesday night since RHP Greg Maddux will start, putting Henry Blanco behind the plate.

---

Padres-Cubs

SAN DIEGO: Lefty reliever Jesse Orosco turned 46 on Monday, and is trying to become the 23rd major leaguer to play beyond his 46th birthday. "It's pretty remarkable what he's done," Bochy said. Ryan Klesko reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 15 games.

CHICAGO: Closer Antonio Alfonseca, on the disabled list since March 21 with a strained right hamstring, threw live batting practice on Tuesday. Alfonseca threw about 35 pitches, and said he didn't feel any pain. "I'm fine," he said. "I feel all right." He'll throw again Thursday, but will need a rehab assignment somewhere. But right now we're very, very happy and satisfied with what we've seen." ... Going into Tuesday night's game, the Cubs had already drawn 91 walks. ... Sammy Sosa was back in the lineup Tuesday after getting beaned Sunday by a Salomon Torres fastball. The impact was so severe it ripped a large hole in front of his left ear flap. "I guess I'm a gladiator," Sosa said, laughing. "The reason why I'm here today, I have to say one more time, the helmet I got protected me. It was a tough shot. I really have to say that. But to me, it didn't cause me any trouble. I feel great. I never lost control of myself. I never lost consciousness. I'm 100 percent ready."

---

AMERICAN LEAGUE

White Sox-Orioles

CHICAGO: White Sox manager Jerry Manuel will keep struggling Jon Garland in the starting rotation, even though the right-hander is 0-2 with a 7.32 ERA. "We have confidence he's going to do well. We're not backing that up with thoughts of what we'll do if he doesn't." Garland was rocked for five runs in 2 2-3 innings against Cleveland on Monday, but Manuel said, "Jon has been a guy that when his back is against the wall or when he has to be good ... he's performed extremely well." ... Magglio Ordonez extended his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games with a fourth-inning single Tuesday, but Manuel said, "I don't think he's hot; I think when he's hot, he'll get more than one base hit a game." ... Tuesday's game against Baltimore was Chicago's first outside the AL Central.

BALTIMORE: Bench coach Sam Perlozzo replaced manager Mike Hargrove for a third straight game. Hargrove is in Texas with his ailing mother, but could return Wednesday. ... He will undergo an MRI on Wednesday. ... 1B-DH David Segui ran at slightly more than half speed Tuesday as he strives to return from a strained right hamstring. He missed a fourth straight game. ... Brook Fordyce received a third straight start behind the plate Tuesday night, in part because the Orioles were playing so well with him in the lineup. Baltimore pitchers allowed a total of one run on Sunday and Monday, so Perlozzo decided to once again start Fordyce instead of using Geronimo Gil.

---

TORONTO: DH Josh Phelps was in the lineup. He left Monday's game at Boston after being hit on the left elbow by a John Burkett pitch. ... Rookie Jayson Werth, who had been playing for Class-A Dunedin while coming back from a wrist injury, started in right field. He joined the team on Tuesday. Manager Lou Piniella said the best case situation would be Grieve returning to the lineup this weekend. ... 1B Travis Lee (oblique strain) is hitting in the batting cage. Last season, Boston was 51-25 against the AL East (.671) and 42-44 (.488) against non-division foes. ... Four different Red Sox pitchers allowed a home run in Monday's 11-6 loss to Toronto. Before that, the Red Sox had given up just one homer over 72 innings the previous eight games... Person, who had elbow and shoulder surgery in August of 2002, threw 13 of his 21 pitches for strikes, allowing two hits and striking out one. "No problems tonight," Person said. "I just had to adjust from the bullpen mound to the mound on the field."

TEXAS: RHP Jay Powell was pitching in relief Tuesday night at Double-A Frisco and was expected to work out again with the Rangers on Wednesday before returning home to Mississippi to attend to a family matter. Powell is on the 15-day disabled list with vertigo-like symptoms, the result of a viral infection that bothered him most of the spring. ... Rangers manager Buck Showalter still doesn't have a World Series ring, but he's an Emmy winner. Showalter was part of ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" team that received the Sports Emmy for Best Studio Show at the award ceremony Monday night in New York. Showalter joined Peter Gammons, Karl Ravech and Harold Reynolds as the regular hosts of the nightly program the last two seasons before returning to the field. He got calls from his former co-hosts. "I asked if they give out rings. I'm still waiting for a ring," he said. He already has a place picked out for his Sports Emmy: on the shelf next to a state championship trophy he won in high school.

MINNESOTA: The Twins were 14-5 last season against Kansas City, despite outscoring the Royals only by a 94-91 margin. ... The Twins have either swept or been swept in all six series this season. Yankees-Angels

NEW YORK: The Yankees got their first look at the Angels' World Series championship flag flying in left-center at Edison Field Tuesday night - a reminder of their AL division series loss to the Angels last October. "It's not just another series. We're playing the world champs," said manager Joe Torre, who has led the Yankees to four World Series titles in seven years. "These guys manhandled us." ... Five-time All-Star SS Derek Jeter could start swinging a bat in the next couple of days as he works his way back from a dislocated left shoulder. Jeter is expected to be out at least another three weeks. He was injured in a collision with Toronto C Ken Huckaby in the Yankees' season opener March 31. "Once he starts taking batting practice, my job becomes tougher because he'll probably want to play only one (rehab) game and come back," Torre said. "Even if we weren't playing well, there's still too much of the season left to try and rush him back." ... Tuesday was the 100th anniversary of the Yankees' first game, a 3-1 loss to the Senators at Washington. New York's monicker back then was the Highlanders, which was changed to Yankees in 1913 when they moved from Hilltop Park to the Polo Grounds. ... RHP Steve Karsay had his shoulder examined Tuesday by Dr. James Andrews. "It was great news. I had no clue what to expect when he shut himself down yesterday," Torre said. "He got two cortisone shots and he's got five days before he can pick up a ball, so hopefully all this stuff is going to go away." ... Jose Contreras, who has a 10.80 ERA in five appearances for the Yankees, worked out Tuesday at the New York Yankees' minor league complex - a decision by owner George Steinbrenner that escalated into a dispute between Torre and the Yankees' owner. Contreras threw 82 pitches off a mound but did not face hitters. He is scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Columbus twice next week.

ANAHEIM: RHP Kevin Appier was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained flexor muscle in his right forearm. Appier threw 52 pitches in just two innings Sunday against Seattle before coming out of his fourth start of the season. The 35-year-old right-hander, 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA, has been on the DL only two other times in his 14-year career. ... 2B Adam Kennedy, MVP of last October's AL championship series with three homers in the clinching game, was activated from the 15-day DL after being sidelined by a strained right hamstring. The Angels also recalled OF Jeff DaVannon from Salt Lake and optioned INF Chone Figgins to the Triple-A team. ... CF Darin Erstad wasn't in the starting lineup for the second consecutive game because of an inflamed tendon in his lower right hamstring. I don't know," said Erstad, who is batting .333, with two homers and eight RBIs.

They hit s11 homers in their first 15 games before the White Sox series.

SEATTLE: Manager Bob Melvin has no plans to replace closer Kazuhiro Sasaki. Sasaki has blown three of seven save opportunities and has a 6.48 ERA in nine games and 8 1-3 innings this season. "He's one of the premier closers in this game," Melvin said before Tuesday night's game with Cleveland. "All closers are going to go through their struggles. As of right now, he's our closer and rightly so." ... Mariners pitching coach Bryan Price is expected to miss the first two games of the Cleveland series because he is at home in Scottsdale, Ariz., with his wife, Judy, who is ill. He went home Sunday after the Mariners finished a series in Anaheim. Price's job will be handled by Jim Slaton, who is the pitching coach for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, until Price returns to Seattle.

---

Tigers-Athletics

DETROIT: Manager Alan Trammell is going to leave DH Dean Palmer in the lineup and just let him work out of his offensive funk. Palmer entered Tuesday's game hitting .103 (4-for-39) with 14 strikeouts. He has one hit and 11 strikeouts in his last 24 at-bats. He's been taking extra batting practice and working in the cage. "It's like you lose experience and you lose confidence," he said. "As someone who's been around, you have a plan you take up there for an at-bat. If you don't stick with it, it's hard." Palmer's track record led Trammell to decide to stick with him. "We're going to try to jump start Deano and give him time no matter what," Trammell said. "Not just a game or two. He deserves that." ... Rookie RHP Jeremy Bonderman (0-3) starts Wednesday against the A's, who traded him last July. "I never thought I'd get traded, but it's part of the business," he said.

OAKLAND: 3B Eric Chavez was a late scratch from the lineup with an inflamed left shoulder that has bothered him since spring training. It's from diving. The pain caused him trouble sleeping Sunday night, so manager Ken Macha gave him an additional day off after Monday's off day. An MRI exam Monday was negative. "We didn't see any torn muscles or labrum," trainer Larry Davis said. "The entire joint's swollen." Frank Menechino started in Chavez's place. ... The A's will wait one more day to activate RHP Jim Mecir, who's recovering from surgery to repair a torn left patellar tendon. Mecir was expected to be activated Tuesday but it will be Wednesday instead. Mecir asked for one more day to rest after pitching Saturday and Sunday at Triple-A Sacramento. "I'm going to need a little more work and they're going to ease me into it," Mecir said. "I won't have the workload I usually do." ... Oakland will stick with 11 pitchers, meaning a decision must be made between rookie RHP Mike Neu, taken in the winter-meeting draft, and LHP Micah Bowie, who is out of options.
