Notes from Monday's games

By The Associated Press

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Marlins-Phillies

FLORIDA: 2B Luis Castillo played in his 716th game with the Marlins. The team record held by Jeff Conine is 718 games. ... RHP Josh Beckett (1-1, 3.29 ERA) starts against the Phillies on Tuesday night. He lost to them 8-5 in the season opener. ... Before striking out in the fourth inning, Juan Encarnacion had six hits in eight at-bats against Vicente Padilla. ... The Marlins opened a seven-game road trip.

PHILADELPHIA: CF Marlon Byrd went on the 15-day disabled list after lacerating his left knee sliding into home plate Sunday. Ricky Ledee replaced Byrd in the starting lineup and Jason Michaels took his spot on the roster. ... RHP Brandon Duckworth, on the disabled list since the start of the season, will make one more rehab start for Double-A Reading on Wednesday. He could rejoin the starting rotation next week. ... Joe Roa (0-2, 12.86 ERA) will start against the Marlins on Tuesday night. He could be headed to the bullpen once Duckworth returns. ... C Mike Lieberthal has reached base safely in all 11 games he's played.

---

Cardinals-Brewers

ST. LOUIS: CF Jim Edmonds was named the NL player of the week. Edmonds batted .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in six games for the week ending April 13. He also had a .601 on-base percentage with five walks. "Obviously, it's a great honor. But I try not to put too much into it," Edmonds said. "It's nice to get off to a hot start, don't get me wrong. And when you get older, it's also nice to get an award that also brings recognition to your team." ... C Mike Matheny said the Cardinals' 11-8 comeback victory over Houston on Sunday was good for the team's psyche. St. Louis overcame an early four-run deficit. "Any time of the year, you can feed off that," Matheny said. "That's something a team can thrive on and it can become the attitude of a team late in a game." The Cardinals also had a big comeback in the season opener against Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE: Unlike Davey Lopes and Jerry Royster, who managed the Brewers last year, Ned Yost isn't shy about admitting he's made some mistakes so far. Yost said he second-guessed himself for pinch-hitting prospect Enrique Cruz instead of giving him playing time in the field Sunday in a 9-3 loss at Arizona. Said Yost: "If you don't second-guess yourself, you're not going to get any better." ... The Milwaukee Braves Historical Association held a pregame ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Braves' first home game at Milwaukee County Stadium, a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on April 14, 1953. The mayor, governor and county supervisor each proclaimed Monday "Milwaukee Braves Day." Former Milwaukee Braves players Johnny Logan, Andy Pafko, Jack Dittmer and Felix Mantilla were on hand for the festivities, and Pafko won over the crowd by playing two 1940s tunes on his accordion.

Reds-Cubs

CINCINNATI: SS Barry Larkin was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf, retroactive to last Friday. He was injured legging out a triple Thursday in Houston and has not played since. The Reds activated INF Juan Castro, who was rehabilitating an injured knee at Triple-A Louisville. Larkin is batting .222 in nine games, with three hits in his last 22 at-bats (.136). He wasn't too thrilled about going on the DL. "He doesn't want to do it, but he understands the intellectual side of it," manager Bob Boone said. Larkin will return to Cincinnati on Tuesday to start a rehabilitation program. ... Boone decided to move INF Brandon Larson down to the eighth spot in the order. Larson has been struggling offensively - he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Sunday and was batting .088 coming into the game. Boone said he will remain patient with Larson because he thinks Larson will eventually come out of his slump. "Every player that has played a lot has gotten out of sync," Boone said. ... Boone said he would not use LHP Felix Heredia, who threw five innings the past two games.

CHICAGO: Even though RHP Joe Borowski has had success in the closer role, manager Dusty Baker is not ready to give him the permanent job. Baker will continue to decide who gets the job on a day-to-day basis based on matchups. Borowski has worked 8 1-3 scoreless innings in his first eight outings this season. He has three saves in three opportunities. RHP Antonio Alfonseca was the closer for most of the 2002 season and has been rehabbing a strained right hamstring in Arizona. ... OF Sammy Sosa came in without a homer since hitting his 500th against Cincinnati's Scott Sullivan on April 4. ... RHP Mark Prior was coming off a four-hit shutout of Montreal last Wednesday. The last Cubs pitcher to throw back-to-back shutouts was Steve Trout in 1987.

Astros-Giants

HOUSTON: OF Lance Berkman got the day off, his first of the season. "We have a four-city trip ahead of us and I like to rest guys before they get tired so they won't get tired," manager Jimy Williams said. "It has nothing to do with who's pitching. I just decided to give him a day off." Berkman, who batted .048 (1-for-21 with a home run) against the Giants last year, has never faced LHP Damian Moss. ... OF Brian Hunter made his first start of the season in place of Berkman. ... First base coach Jose Cruz, in his seventh season with the Astros, was on the same field as his son, Giants OF Jose Cruz, Jr., for the first time ever during a regular-season game. He was not involved in pregame preparations regarding his son. "I have a lot of respect for Cheo," Williams said. "Out of respect for him we didn't go over his son. I thought that was the right thing to do." ... The Astros began their longest road trip (12 games in 13 days in four cities and three time zones) since their infamous 28-day, 16-game, eight-city trip from July 27-Aug. 23, 1992. ... C Brad Ausmus (34) and C Gregg Zaun (32) celebrated birthdays.

SAN FRANCISCO: 2B Ray Durham was held out of the lineup only as a precaution. He left Sunday's game in the fourth inning with a mild strain of his right groin. "So far it's not bad news," manager Felipe Alou said. "He's not in pain or anything." Trainer Stan Conti said Durham would go through his pregame routine, including drills and batting practice, as usual. "He has very little problems," Conti said. "Now the key is to make sure it stays that way and doesn't get any worse. He probably could have played." ... Alou said he's not too worried about 3B Edgardo Alfonzo, who entered hitting just .176. "You have to bear with him and be patient," said Alou, who has moved Alfonzo from the No. 5 spot behind Barry Bonds to No. 2 in recent games. "I'm sure this is not the first time he's gotten off to a slow start or been in a slump. You have to let him work his way out of it." ... RHP Jesse Foppert was originally scheduled to make his major league debut Monday but Saturday's rainout changed the Giants' pitching plans. Foppert attended the University of San Francisco, where he was an infielder his first two years before he was converted to pitcher his junior year. There are nine players - including three juniors - still playing at USF who were his teammates.

Rockies-Diamondbacks

COLORADO: The Rockies have won seven in a row at home against the Diamondbacks, including a three-game sweep last week, but came in having dropped nine straight at Arizona. ... At 7-5, Colorado has a winning record after 12 games for only the third time in franchise history. ... SS Jose Hernandez entered with an eight-game hitting streak, while CF Preston Wilson hit safely in 11 of the team's first 12 games. ... The Rockies opened a seven-game road trip. After four against the Diamondbacks, Colorado plays three in San Diego.

ARIZONA: RHP John Patterson gets his first big league start of the year Tuesday night. He opened the season in the minors. ... C Robby Hammock got a base hit against Milwaukee on Friday night in his first major league game, then went 3-for-4 Sunday with a three-run homer and a double. ... OF Danny Bautista's three hits Sunday equaled his total for the season up to that point. He raised his average to .194. ... After hitting .190 with runners in scoring position in their first 11 games, Arizona was 7-for-16 in those situations in Sunday's 9-3 victory over the Brewers.

Mets-Expos

NEW YORK: 1B Mo Vaughn had fluid drained from his inflamed left knee during the game. Manager Art Howe said the team wanted to make sure there would be no additional swelling during the flight to Pittsburgh. Vaughn said he thought he would be able to play Tuesday. ... RHP Pedro Astacio, recovering from tendinitis in his right shoulder, allowed three hits in five shutout innings Sunday for St. Lucie against Detroit's Lakeland farm team in the Class-A Florida State League. He threw 71 pitches in his third rehabilitation start. "At least one more," Howe said when asked how many additional rehab starts Astacio will make. "Get up to 90 (pitches)."

MONTREAL: With a temporary home, Expos players have to figure out how to deal with mundane tasks, such as laundry. A sign was up in the clubhouse touting "Antoine's of Puerto Rico," which promised to provide same-day service Monday. ... The Expos have held at least a share of first place every day this season. ... Montreal is 9-0 when the gametime temperature is above 40, and 0-4 when it is below.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Blue Jays-Yankees

TORONTO: Pete Walker will make his second start of the season Thursday in the series finale. He went six innings Saturday in a 9-6 loss to Minnesota, allowing four hits and leaving with a 2-1 lead. ... The Blue Jays will finish their 11-game road trip with four games in Boston and three in Tampa Bay.

NEW YORK: 3B Drew Henson was 5-for-28 with nine strikeouts in his first seven games with Triple-A Columbus. The former Michigan quarterback hit .240 last season for Columbus with 18 homers and 65 RBIs, striking out 151 times in 471 at-bats. He gave up football when he signed a $17 million, six-year contract in 2001. ... RHP Jeff Weaver appealed his $1,000 fine for throwing near the head of Detroit's Carlos Pena in a March 24 exhibition game. ... Mike Mussina (2-0) will start Tuesday night against Toronto's Roy Halladay (0-1).

---

Royals-Indians

KANSAS CITY: The Royals entered leading the AL in ERA at 2.53, more than half a run better than second-place Cleveland. Manager Tony Pena said the key has been throwing first-pitch strikes. "I tell them, work ahead in the count," he said. "Throw a strike. I don't mean down the middle, I mean a quality strike. Good pitchers do that. They trust their stuff." ... Pena ignored some derogatory remarks by Cleveland players in the local papers about the Royals' 9-1 start. "I don't know what they said and don't want to know," he said. "I told my players the same thing. Everybody is entitled to say what they want. Fine with me. I don't pay attention anyway." ... 1B Mike Sweeney returned to the lineup after missing two games with the flu. Most of the 17 Royals stricken with the flu last week are back. ... Pena said he is proud of his young team's progress. "A lot of times, I don't even have to flash a sign, they know what to do," he said. When Michael Tucker opened Sunday's game with a bunt single and was sacrificed over by Joe Randa, "that was their idea," Pena said. "They tried to get us a run right away. I like that."

CLEVELAND: Manager Eric Wedge said several players off to slow starts at the plate will be given "every opportunity" to work things out. "We are not going to bring guys up just to bring them up, there has to be a reason," Wedge said when asked if roster moves are imminent. "We would not have brought these guys we have with us right here if we did not believe in them." Rookies Travis Hafner (.147), Brandon Phillips (.176) and Josh Bard (.188) along with 3B Casey Blake and OFs Matt Lawton and Karim Garcia entered hitting a combined .161 (31-for-192). ... Wedge said he sees Hafner (in a 1-for-28 slide) making progress. "His pitch selection, his approach, all of those things are solid," Wedge said. "He's headed in the right direction." ... Garcia tested his sore left wrist by hitting off a tee, but missed his fifth straight game. "I felt great ... but it was only off the tee," he said. "If I was making out the lineup, I'd play tomorrow." ... RHP Aaron Myette, on a 30-day injury rehab of his strained right quad, was moved to Triple-A Buffalo after pitching five hitless innings and striking out seven in three outings at Double-A Akron.

---

Angels-Rangers

ANAHEIM: After a 2-5 start, the World Series champions are starting to get their game together. The Angels swept a three-game series at Oakland last weekend and carried a five-game winning streak into their series at Texas. "We've kind of settled into more the style of ball we need to play," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Once you get all the pats on the back and the congratulations over, it's good to get into the season." ... Backup catchers Jose Molina and Shawn Wooten got some extra work in before the game. They worked on some fundamentals, such as blocking balls, and caught in the bullpen. "Their ability to stay sharp is important to our team," said Scioscia, a former catcher. Bengie Molina has started 10 of 12 games, and Jose Molina started the other two. Wooten's only start was as a designated hitter.

TEXAS: The entire team signed a jersey to send to Chief Warrant Officer Ronald D. Young Jr., one of the seven POWs released Sunday by Iraqi troops. Young is the cousin of Rangers catcher Todd Greene's wife. The No. 1 jersey had Young's name on the back. ... RHP Todd Van Poppel threw another simulated game, and manager Buck Showalter said he will throw one more before being sent out on a rehabilitation assignment. Van Poppel has been on the disabled list since March 24 because of a strained right groin.

---

Athletics-Mariners

OAKLAND: INF Scott Hatteberg had an MRI exam and X-rays for a sore right ankle but results won't be known until later this week. He didn't start as the A's opened a four-game series in Seattle but was available if needed. "When I'm hitting, it doesn't bother me," he said. "Running, when I push off, is uncomfortable." ... With Oakland hitting .260 as a team through 12 games, manager Ken Macha was encouraged that 10 of 14 players showed up for extra batting practice. He declined to disclose the stragglers.

SEATTLE: LHP Arthur Rhodes returned to the bullpen after two days off - his wife delivered a son. RHP Giovanni Carrara remained excused after his wife had twin boys Sunday. "We have a lot of cigars around here," manager Bob Melvin said. ... OF Mike Cameron had his first day off, resting a sore neck and wrist sustained while crashing into the wall on a fine catch Saturday. The injuries weren't considered serious.
