NL: Expos sweep Mets

By The Associated Press

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Fernando Tatis hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning as the Montreal Expos completed a four-game sweep of their first series in their new part-time home, beating the New York Mets 5-3 Monday.

Rey Sanchez, one of the Puerto Rican stars getting to play major league ball in their home country, set up the winning rally when he misplayed Vladimir Guerrero's one-out grounder to shortstop for an error.

The NL East-leading Expos (9-4), who play 22 of their home games in San Juan, extended their winning streak to five. New York's island visit was a wipeout, with Montreal outscoring the last-place Mets 22-8.

New York (4-9) lost its sixth straight and dropped five games back. The Mets hadn't been swept by the Expos in a four-game series since September 1972.

Dan Smith (1-0) got the win and Rocky Biddle earned his fourth save.

Scott Strickland (0-1) took the loss.

Phillies 5, Marlins 2

PHILADELPHIA - Jim Thome hit a two-run triple and the Philadelphia bullpen made it stand up against Florida.

The Phillies have won three straight and five of seven. Florida lost its second in a row after winning four straight.

Vicente Padilla (2-1) gave up two runs, three hits and struck out seven in 5 1-3 innings. He left with a contusion on his left forearm after getting hit by a pitch from Marlins starter A.J. Burnett (0-1) in the fourth.

Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his second save in three chances. Pinch-hitter Tyler Houston's two-run double gave the Phillies a 5-2 lead in the eighth.

Cardinals 7, Brewers 5

MILWAUKEE - Orlando Palmeiro homered and tied a career high with four RBIs as St. Louis kept Milwaukee winless at home.

Brett Tomko (1-1) survived a shaky start to send the Brewers to an 0-4 mark at Miller Park, and 0-4 against the Cardinals. He gave up five earned runs on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols left after being hit on his right thumb by a fastball from Curtis Leskanic in the seventh. X-rays were negative and Pujols is day-to-day.

Scott Rolen homered off Milwaukee's Todd Ritchie (1-1), who left in the fifth with what the team called fatigue in his right shoulder. He fell to 1-8 in nine career starts against the Cardinals.

Steve Kline got one out for his third save in four opportunities.

Giants 4, Astros 2

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds hit his 618th homer and the Giants spoiled Jeff Kent's return to San Francisco.

The Giants improved to 12-1, keeping pace with their best start in 65 years.

Kent, the 2000 NL MVP who played the previous six years in San Francisco and helped lead the Giants to the World Series last season, went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. He signed an $18.2 million, two-year contract in the offseason with the Astros, who have lost three straight after winning four of five.

Damian Moss (2-0) gave up a run on five hits in six innings as the Giants beat Houston for the 17th time in 22 games. Tim Worrell got his sixth save in seven opportunities.

The Giants' 12-1 start matches their best since the 1938 team also began 12-1. Only the 1918 Giants started better at 18-1.

Wade Miller (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits and four walks in 5 1-3 innings.

Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX - Larry Walker drove in four runs with his first two homers of the season and Nelson Cruz became the fourth Colorado pitcher to win three games in April.

Cruz (3-0), who was supposed to be Colorado's long reliever but moved into the rotation because of injuries to Denny Neagle and Denny Stark, scattered four hits in 5 2-3 scoreless innings.

Jose Jimenez got two outs for his fourth save in as many chances.

Byung-Hyun Kim (0-3), Arizona's closer before this season, gave up one run - Preston Wilson's solo homer - on five hits through six innings before leaving with a bruised right shin.
