Don't tell backup catcher Todd Pratt his performance was surprising. Pratt drove in three runs, offsetting solo homers by Austin Kearns and Adam Dunn, as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Reds 8-5 Saturday.

"Just because we're bench players doesn't mean we couldn't be everyday players on other teams," said Pratt, playing in only his second game of the season.

Pratt appeared in just 39 games last season, including two at first base, while backing up Mike Lieberthal. But in those limited appearances, he hit a career-best .311.

"This bench is experienced," Pratt said. "It's starting to show."

Pratt, who singled in a run in the second, gave starter Kevin Millwood a boost and Philadelphia a 4-3 lead when he drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single to cap a three-run fifth.

"That made all the difference in the world," Millwood said. "I knew I had to shut them down. I had put us in a hole."

Millwood (2-1) retired the Reds in order in the fifth and sixth, leaving with seven strikeouts. He allowed four hits and walked two.

The Reds had just one hit off Millwood until Kearns and Dunn hit consecutive home runs in the fourth, and Reggie Taylor singled in a run to make it 3-1.

It was the third home run in two games for Kearns, whose two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning beat the Phillies on Friday night.

Cincinnati starter Jimmy Haynes (0-3) lasted five innings in his third ineffective start of the season. He gave up four runs on eight hits and four walks, yet his ERA actually improved two points to 10.38.

"I thought he pitched pretty good," Reds manager Bob Boone said. "He was better than he has been. He was closer with his pitches."

Haynes' third start had been pushed back a day because he had to leave last Saturday's game after four innings with lower back spasms.

"The back problem was still there. It was sore, but it didn't lock up on me," Haynes said. "I could bend my back and keep the ball down."

Ricky Ledee, whose bases-loaded walk forced in a run in the fifth, and Tomas Perez had RBI singles off Josias Manzanillo in the seventh to make it 6-3. Jimmy Rollins added a two-run single for Philadelphia in the ninth.

Brandon Larson had an RBI single for the Reds in the eighth, and Aaron Boone singled in the final run in the ninth.

Notes: Rollins' single in the second extended his hitting streak to seven games for Philadelphia. ... Aaron Boone stole second in the first inning, the Reds' first stolen base of the season. The last time the Reds went 10 games without a stolen base to start a season was 1957.
