NEW YORK - Hideki Matsui hit a grand slam for his first major league home run, leading the New York Yankees over the Minnesota Twins 7-3 Tuesday in their home opener.
Andy Pettitte (2-0) improved to 3-0 in home openers, allowing three runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings, and Robin Ventura homered as the Yankees won on a chilly 35-degree day. The opener was snowed out Monday but the grounds crew worked all night.
Joe Mays (1-1) intentionally walked Bernie Williams to load the bases in the fifth and Matsui homered in his 34th big league plate appearance.
Mays allowed seven runs and eight hits in five innings as the Twins lost their fourth straight game after a 3-0 start and fell below .500 for the first time since the end of the 2000 season.

SEATTLE - Jamie Moyer (1-1) allowed four hits in seven innings in the first home game for new Mariners manager Bob Melvin.
John Olerud went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Mark McLemore, substituting at designated hitter while Edgar Martinez recovers from a strained left hamstring, added two hits for Seattle.
Jeff Nelson and Arthur Rhodes combined for two innings of hitless relief. It was the first time the Angels were shut out since last Aug. 2 against the Yankees.

White Sox 5, Indians 3
CLEVELAND - Jose Valentin hit an RBI single in the 10th inning off Chad Paronto (0-1) and Frank Thomas added a sacrifice fly as Chicago spoiled Cleveland's home opener.
It was 34 degrees at the start of the game, which was rescheduled from Monday because of rain and cold weather.
Billy Koch (1-0) pitched two innings as the White Sox won their fourth straight. Omar Vizquel was 4-for-5.
Blue Jays 8, Red Sox 4

Toronto's Chris Woodward went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a go-ahead single and an RBI triple.
Lowe allowed five runs, nine hits and four walks before leaving with one out in the sixth due to a blister on his right thumb. A 20-game winner last year, he has a 7.94 ERA after two starts.

Pinch-hitter Ben Grieve doubled leading off the bottom half against Jorge Julio (0-1), who is 0-for-2 in save chances this year.
With the bases loaded, Marlon Anderson hit a tying RBI grounder to second. Jerry Hairston's throw pulled shortstop Deivi Cruz off second base for an error that left the bases loaded with one out for Lee, who singled against Buddy Groom.
The announced crowd of 9,723 was Tampa Bay's smallest since 2001. Cruz drove in three runs for Baltimore.
Athletics 2, Rangers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas - Barry Zito pitched four-hit ball and struck out seven in seven innings for his 10th straight victory.

The left-hander, 8-0 in 12 starts against the Rangers, has allowed two runs over 13 innings this season - a 1.38 ERA.
Keith Foulke got four outs for his third save, striking out pinch-hitter Mike Lamb and getting Doug Glanville on a popup with a runner on third to end it.
