KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Runelvys Hernandez allowed two hits in seven innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1 Saturday and became the first major league team to start 5-0 after a 100-loss season.
Indians left-hander C.C. Sabathia (0-1) hyperextended his left elbow on a pitch in the seventh inning. He will return Sunday to Cleveland to have his arm examined.
Hernandez (2-0) beat the Chicago White Sox in the Royals' season opener, a start he was awarded in a coin toss. Against the Indians, he allowed one run, struck out three and walked one. He has a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings.
Jason Grimsley pitched perfect eighth and rookie Mike MacDougal finished the two-hitter for his third save in as tries.
The 5-0 start is the best in the history of the Royals, who were 62-100 last season. Three other teams started 4-0 following 100-loss season - the 1952 St. Louis Browns, 1906 Boston Bean Eaters and the 1899 St. Louis Perfectos -- but all lost their fifth games.
Orioles 2, Red Sox 1
BALTIMORE - Chad Fox walked Tony Batista with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning, lifting the Baltimore Orioles over the Boston Red Sox.
The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak for the Red Sox, who scored 42 runs in their first five games. Baltimore had dropped three straight after winning on opening day.
B.J. Surhoff drew a one-out walk from Fox (0-2) and was replaced by pinch-runner Melvin Mora. Jeff Conine then doubled and Jay Gibbons received an intentional walk to fill the bases. Fox went to 3-0 on Batista, then got the count full before throwing a pitch wide of the plate.
The Boston bullpen twice blew three-run leads in its first two games against Tampa Bay, and Friday night Ramiro Mendoza yielded four ninth-inning runs in an 8-7 victory.
Boston starter Pedro Martinez allowed one run and four hits in eight innings. He struck out six and walked none.
The Red Sox tied it in the ninth when Jorge Julio walked Johnny Damon with the bases loaded. B.J. Ryan (2-0) then struck out pinch-hitter Shea Hillenbrand.
White Sox 7, Tigers 0
CHICAGO - Mark Buehrle allowed three hits in eight innings and Frank Thomas, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Jose Valentin homered as the Chicago White Sox beat the winless Detroit Tigers.
Gametime temperature was 32 degrees, the coldest home game for the White Sox since they started recording temperatures in 1990.
Detroit, 0-5 for the second straight season, has scored just four runs this year, a franchise record low, and has just 16 hits. Last year, the Tigers lost their first 11 games.
Detroit's only hits off Buehrle (1-1) were singles by Shane Halter in the first, Gene Kingsale in the third and Eric Munson in the eighth. Buehrle retired 16 of his final 17 hitters, and Rick White pitched the ninth.
Thomas got his first homer of the season, connecting off Mike Maroth (0-2) for a 4-0 lead in the fifth.
Athletics 4, Angels 2
OAKLAND, Calif. - Adam Piatt homered and doubled in a rare start and John Halama did not allow an earned run in 5 2-3 innings as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Anaheim Angels.
Piatt hit a solo home run in the first off Jarrod Washburn (0-1) and also made an athletic, running catch in left on a line drive by David Eckstein in the second.
Washburn was hit by Mark Ellis' line drive in the upper area of his left arm with two outs in the seventh. The left-hander immediately left the game, and there was no word on the extent of his injury.
Washburn sprained his left shoulder when he landed hard on it during a pitching drill at spring training and only made two exhibition starts.
Halama (1-0), one of four lefties in Oakland's rotation, was tested in all but the third inning, when he retired the side.
Ricardo Rincon got one out in the eighth and Keith Foulke worked the ninth for his first save.
Devil Rays 6, Yankees 5
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Al Martin singled over a drawn-in outfield with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays overcame a huge blunder to hand the New York Yankees their first loss of the season.
The Devil Rays scored twice in the eighth to tie it, then loaded the bases in the ninth when Carl Crawford singled, Rocco Baldelli doubled and Aubrey Huff drew an intentional walk from Antonio Osuna (0-1).
Martin lined Osuna's first pitch over the head of right fielder Raul Mondesi, ending the Devil Rays' five-game losing streak and denying the Yankees what would have been a club-record fifth straight win on the road to start a season.
The Yankees scored three times and took a 5-3 lead in a sixth inning that featured a bizarre play.
Bernie Williams tripled home a run and Hideki Matsui and Bubba Trammell followed with RBI singles. Devil Rays starter Joe Kennedy then stepped off the rubber to make an appeal play at the plate.
But Kennedy lobbed the ball over the head of catcher Toby Hall, allowing runners on first and second to advance a base. The pitcher was charged with Tampa Bay's second error of the inning.
Kennedy was lifted right after the gaffe. Lance Carter (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 innings in relief for the win.
Rangers 8, Mariners 4
ARLINGTON, Texas - Juan Gonzalez homered twice and Alex Rodriguez and Hank Blalock also connected, leading the Texas Rangers over the Seattle Mariners.
Gonzalez has 408 career home runs, and moved past Duke Snider for 33rd on the all-time list. Gonzalez and Rodriguez each have three home runs this season.
Gonzalez's three-run homer capped a four-run first for the Rangers, who broke a three-game losing streak. His solo homer in the fifth, an out after Rodriguez homered, made it 6-2.
It was the 44th multihomer game for Gonzalez, the first for the two-time AL MVP since he hit two for Cleveland on Sept. 8, 2001.
Colby Lewis (1-0) struck out eight in 6 2-3 innings. Ugueth Urbina, the new Rangers closer, got the final four outs. He has saves in both Texas wins this season.
Gil Meche (0-1) gave up six runs on nine hits over five innings in his first start since July 4, 2000.
Blue Jays 4, Twins 3, 11 innings
MINNEAPOLIS - Josh Phelps homered off Eddie Guardado with one out in the top of the 11th inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a victory over Minnesota.
Phelps, who also homered in the Blue Jays' 7-2 win on Friday, sent an 0-1 pitch from Guardado (0-1) - the Twins' All-Star closer - into the seats in left-center field.
Kelvim Escobar pitched the bottom of the 11th for his first save, and Pete Walker (1-0) picked up the victory.
