Cubs 9, Reds 7

Griffey's diving play brings a more devastating loss; CF dislocates shoulder, is out indefinitely for 1-4 Reds

Jimmy Haynes was already at the hospital when the Reds suffered their most significant setback yet this season.

"I was sitting in there waiting to get my MRI done," the Reds pitcher said, "and I saw it on TV."

A bad start to the first week at Great American Ball Park got much worse Saturday.

Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. dislocated his right shoulder diving for a ball in the eighth inning of a 9-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

"Obviously this is a very serious and significant injury," Reds general manager Jim Bowden said.

The extent of the injury and the amount of time Griffey will miss is unknown.

"He's definitely out for a significant amount of time," manager Bob Boone said.

X-rays taken at Good Samaritan Hospital were negative and results of an MRI were unavailable. Team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek will examine Griffey today.

"It just seems like there's a little bit of a hex over our ballpark right now," third baseman Brandon Larson said after the Reds dropped to 1-4 at Great American.

"We've had some setbacks and today was a big one. ... Losing Junior is going to be big, but you've got to just keep trucking."

Griffey's injury wasn't the only bad news from the game.

Making his second start of the regular season, Haynes was pulled after four innings because of back spasms. Results of his MRI exam were not available.

"It was actually hurting before I went out there today," said Haynes, who allowed five runs on seven hits and has a 12.38 ERA in two starts. "As the game went on it got a little worse. It's probably best to try and shut it down and not take a chance on it getting real bad."

Haynes' early exit again forced Boone to call on his bullpen. Five relievers, including starter Jimmy Anderson, appeared.

The Cubs led 6-5 when, with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth, catcher Paul Bako drove a Josias Manzanillo pitch to left center.

His body outstretched, Griffey slammed into the turf and immediately began writhing in pain.

"I assume it was pretty close," left fielder Adam Dunn said. "He's got 10 Gold Gloves. I assume he knows when to dive and when not to.

"All the stuff he did to try and prevent injuries this year. A fluke injury like that, it's a shame."

Griffey was helped off the field, and doctors popped his shoulder back into place soon after.

Boone said any roster moves probably would be made on Monday's day off. Reggie Taylor is likely to fill in for Griffey, and Jose Guillen, Emil Brown and Jacob Cruz could be candidates for a call-up from Triple-A Louisville.

"We're struggling as a team right now," Haynes said. "You go through these spurts, and hopefully we can pull out of it pretty soon."
