AL: Twins sweep Tigers

By The Associated Press

DETROIT - Kyle Lohse allowed two hits in eight innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 Thursday to complete an opening three-game sweep.

Minnesota improved to 3-0 for the second time in three years. The Tigers started 0-11 last season.

Detroit managed just two runs and 10 hits in the series and has lost 12 straight to the Twins. The game drew 8,862, the smallest crowd at Comerica Park, which opened in 2000.

Lohse (1-0) retired his first 16 batters before Omar Infante doubled. Eddie Guardado pitched a one-hit ninth for his second save. Adam Bernero (0-1) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings.

Royals 12, White Sox 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Ken Harvey had a two-run single and Brent Mayne hit a three-run homer as Kansas City rallied from a 6-5 deficit in the eighth inning and completed a three-game sweep.

Jose Valentin hit a pair of two-run homers and also tripled for the White Sox. Billy Koch, acquired from Oakland during offseason, blew a save in his first chance for Chicago.

Kansas City, which scored all its runs with two outs, is 3-0 for the first time since 1979, and Chicago is 0-3 for the first time since 1995.

Ryan Bukvich (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief. Tom Gordon (0-1) was the loser.

Red Sox 14, Devil Rays 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Kevin Millar homered and drove in four runs for Boston, which has won three straight after losing to Tampa Bay in its opener.

Millar had an RBI single off Nick Bierbrodt (0-1) in a five-run third inning, a solo homer off reliever Jorge Sosa in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth. With a chance to hit for the cycle, he flied out in the eighth.

Nomar Garciaparra and Shea Hillenbrand had three RBIs each, and Casey Fossum (1-0) allowed three runs and six hits over five innings.

Mariners 7, Athletics 6, 11 innings

OAKLAND, Calif. - Ben Davis hit a leadoff homer in the 11th inning as Seattle blew two late leads but still got new manager Bob Melvin his first victory.

Seattle led 4-3 in the ninth, but Scott Hatteberg tied it with an RBI single off closer Kazuhiro Sasaki. After Mike Cameron drove home pinch-runner Mark McLemore with a sacrifice fly off Keith Foulke in the 10th, Terrence Long hit a one-out homer to right off Jeff Nelson (1-0) to tie it again.

Davis' first hit of the season was a homer to left-center off Ricardo Rincon (0-1). McLemore added a run-scoring double.

Indians 3, Orioles 0

BALTIMORE - Brian Anderson marked his return to the Indians by pitching eight innings of four-hit ball, and Matt Lawton hit a three-run homer as Cleveland beat Baltimore.

The game drew a crowd of 18,470 - the lowest attendance in the 12-year history of Camden Yards. The previous low was 20,279, set last September against Toronto.

In a matchup of pitchers that played with the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, Anderson (1-0) outperformed Rick Helling (0-1), who took a one-hitter into the sixth inning before faltering.
