OAKLAND, Calif. - Tim Hudson and Ricardo Rincon combined on the Athletics' first opening-day shutout in 45 years, and Erubiel Durazo drove in all of Oakland's runs in a 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Seattle and Oakland were the final big league teams to start their seasons. They were supposed to open the year March 25 in Tokyo, but the two-game series was canceled because of the war with Iraq.

Hudson allowed five hits and struck out four in eight innings, getting 16 groundball outs. Rincon struck out two in a perfect ninth.

It was the first opening-day shutout in franchise history since Ned Garver pitched a seven-hitter for the Kansas City A's to beat the Cleveland Indians in 1958.

Durazo hit a two-run homer and a three-run double off loser Freddy Garcia in his debut for the defending AL West champions.

Oakland's Ken Macha won his first game as a major league manager, while Bob Melvin lost his first.

Yankees 10, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO - The New York Yankees managed just fine without Derek Jeter, getting two homers from Jason Giambi and seven shutout innings from Andy Pettitte to beat Toronto.

One day after losing their All-Star shortstop to a dislocated left shoulder, the Yankees got contributions throughout the lineup and won their second straight game over the Blue Jays to open the season.

Jorge Posada homered off loser Cory Lidle and drove in three runs, Giambi hit a pair of solo shots, Alfonso Soriano had two RBIs, and backup shortstop Enrique Wilson went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.

Jeter was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and will be out for at least a month - it could be up to four months if he needs surgery. Jeter will have an MRI exam in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday.

Red Sox 9, Devil Rays 8

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- Kevin Millar homered off loser Jorge Sosa in the 16th inning for Boston.

Millar was sent to the Red Sox by the Florida Marlins in the offseason after he chose not to play for the Chunichi Dragons despite agreeing to a $6.2 million, two-year deal with the Japanese team. He said he did not want to play overseas as the United States prepared for war with Iraq.

The Devil Rays stranded a club-record 21 runners in the longest game in franchise history.

Brandon Lyon went three innings for the win. The revamped Boston bullpen blew a three-run lead in the late innings for the second consecutive game.
